Notes from Pam FischlEmail Etiquette ActivityIn all cases we recommend that the student provide:Appropriate subject lineSalutationIntroduce themselves and identify class in which they are a studentSuccinct messageClosingBefore sending an email students should first read the syllabus and any materials provided for the assignment before they write. In many instances they may find the answer to their questions there. Additionally, proofreading and editing are essential, but many students use their phones to send message which can hamper that process. From: student@uconn.edu> Sent: Friday, February 23, 2018 11:56 AMTo: Fischl, Pamela <pamela.fischl@uconn.edu>Subject: About the assignmentHi Pam,? ? ? ? You mentioned the assignment in class today, but I still don't understand how to do it. Could you explain to me again? Thanks!Regards,StudentFeedbackMany faculty teach multiple sections of the same class, so providing that information is useful. For example, student could have indicated they were in my UNIV 1800-123 course in the message or beneath their name.Recommend students use care in what they ask their professor to do by email; if direct question that can be easily answered, email might be acceptable. In the case I recommended that if this were a real situation the student indicate there were unclear about the assignment and ask if they could meet. Students were invited to call me Pam at the beginning of the semester, so addressing me informally is acceptable. However, when in doubt, use formal language. ____________________________________________________________________________________________From: student@uconn.edu>Sent: Friday, February 23, 2018 11:57 AMTo: Fischl, Pamela <pamela.fischl@uconn.edu>Subject: About the accommodation letterHi Pam,I am applying for an internship in a big company, and it requires an accommodation letter from one of my professor. I think about you, and I think you are the perfect person who can write this accommodation letter for me. So is it okay that you write this accommodation letter for me? Thank you so much!StudentFeedback:In this case I shared with student that the word they were looking for was recommendation rather than accommodation. We also talked about potentially adding why I was the “perfect person” to write the letter____________________________________________________________________________________________From: student@uconn.edu>Sent: Friday, February 23, 2018 11:58 AMTo: Fischl, Pamela <pamela.fischl@uconn.edu>Subject: The class situationHi Pam,I am one of the students in your FYE class. I am from China, this course is so difficult for me because of the difficult English words, some proper nouns. So I’m afraid that I am going to fail the class. Could you tell me how to learn better in this class? Or I can make an appointment to your office hours and talk to you directly. Thanks!Regards,StudentFeedback:Since this student shared outright that one of their concerns was their ability to communicate in English, I didn’t make any corrections on the message. If I were to receive a message like this I would share in their concern about language and want to find a way to meet in person._____________________________________________________________________________________________From: student@uconn.edu> Sent: Monday, February 19, 2018 2:52 PMTo: Fischl, Pamela <pamela.fischl@uconn.edu>Subject: On class writingDear producers Pamela,Can I have an appointment? Because I have some questions to consult you, I think face-to-face communication can solve my problems better. What's your free time, please? Thanks,Sincerely,StudentFeedback:Discussed importance of editing the message before sending it because student used word producers instead of professor.Shared that should appear Professor FischlSuggested rewording to say something like “I write today because I’d like to make an appointment” or “I have some questions I’d like to ask and wondered if we could find a time to meet face-to-face”Also, only one closing is customary—choose Thanks, or Sincerely, _____________________________________________________________________________________________From: student@uconn.edu> Sent: Monday, February 19, 2018 9:50 PMTo: Fischl, Pamela <pamela.fischl@uconn.edu>Subject: permission numberDear professor:Hello! I really want to have a UNIV class this semester. it really can improve the learning skill and amplify the circle of friends, but the class is full. Could you please tell me? the permission number of this course?Yours, studentFeedback: In salutation word professor should be capitalized. Professor Smith, for exampleI like that they gave a reason why they wanted to be in the classEncouraged editing before sending because additional capitalization error and extra space. _____________________________________________________________________________________________From: student@uconn.edu> Sent: Monday, February 19, 2018 9:05 PMTo: Fischl, Pamela <pamela.fischl@uconn.edu>Subject: making a appointmentDear professor:?
