OCCUPATIONAL CHILD CARE LESSON F
(4 days)
UNIT: Understanding Child Development
CONCEPT: Theories of development
2.1.4 Investigate the interrelationship of physical, emotional, social and intellectual development
2.1.5 Examine human development theories
OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify characteristics of common social-emotional and cognitive development theories
2. Match human development theories to the developers of those theories
MOTIVATION
Brainteaser Handout.
After completing, ask the students
--How did you solve those puzzles?
--Did you use past experience? Trial and error? Guessed the answer?
“However you solved the puzzles, you used their cognitive skills to solve the puzzles. Today we’re going to look at cognitive development theories and how they can help us understand the mysteries of child development.”
ACTIVITIES:
1. Group discussion
What are theories? Why do people develop theories? How can they help us understand children better?
2. Lecture/Discuss/Handout: ”Human Development Theories—
Cognitive Development Theorists and Theory”
**Before addressing each theorist, show a related website so students can visualize the theorist and have a resource if they want more information.
a. Hand out “Multiple Intelligences Assessment”
--discuss which of the intelligences each student sees in themselves
--look at the 8 multiple intelligences (and note that Gardner now
identifies 9); Discuss what kinds of preschool activities would be beneficial to a
child with that type of intelligence.
--read/discuss Howard Gardner’s information on the handout
b. Read/discuss Jean Piaget’s information on the handout
--show overhead of “Stages of Sensori-motor Development”
demonstrate object permanence with a small object and facial tissue
--handout/lecture with Piaget terms
demonstrate conservation with construction paper
have students give examples of animism they have observed
give examples of centration
c. Read/discuss Lev Vygotsky’s information on handout
--discuss the concept of tools used to learn
3. Group Review
--review cognitive theories with pop-up quiz at:
4. Group Activity
Brainstorm phrases to promote a child’s self-concept. Have each student take a piece of cloth (6”X6”) and write one of the brainstormed affirmations. “Sew” the affirmations together with masking tape
And display the quilt.
“As you praise children and build their self-concept, you are piecing together a security blanket for the
child—as long as a child is protected by their blanket, they can face the problems, harsh words and
negative feelingss the world may give. Now, we’re going to look at three theorists and theories about developing
this self concept—theories about social/emotional development.”
5. Lecture/Discuss/Handout: ”Human Development Theories—
Social/Emotional Development Theorists and Theory”
**Before addressing each theorist, show a related website so students can visualize the theorist and have a resource if they want more information.
a. Read/discuss Erik Erikson’s information on the handout
--have students tell what actions of parents/caregivers would develop a positive
crisis resolution. For example:
Trust vs. Mistrust—picking up an infant when they cry, meeting physical needs
Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt—being sure a play area is safe, then letting the child explore
Initiative vs. Guilt—Praising children when they accomplish a task like setting the table
Industry vs. Inferiority—Praising children when they make an art project
b. Discuss handout “Erik Erikson’s 8 Stages of Psychsocial Development”
--note important events and how they may impact child care as a parent/caregiver
c. Read/discuss Maslow’s information on handout
--show pyramid on website
--discuss each step and its relationship to a child’s behavior
d. Read/discuss Freud’s information on handout
e. Review social/emotional development theories with pop-up quiz at:
6. Individual work
Using one of the theories we studied the last few days, assess your own
personality/development. Which of these theories do you find has validity for
your development. Why?
7) Take-home quiz on Theories of Development
