BECOME AN EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNITION!The Emergency Medical Technician course prepares the EMT student to provide prehospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with a variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries. Areas of study include an introduction to emergency medical services systems, roles and responsibilities of EMTs, anatomy and physiology, medical emergencies, trauma, special considerations for working in the prehospital setting, and providing patient transportation.At the completion of the course students that qualify will be able to sit for the NORTH CAROLINA EMT BASIC CERTIFICATION EXAM. If the test is passed you will be an EMT-qualified to respond to 911 calls with a rescue squad on an ambulance. WHY Take EMT?Anyone interested in the medical field will benefit and enjoy the class. If you want to go into the EMS or Fire Fighting Field this course will give you a huge head start. It will also provide an excellent foundation for anyone interested in most medical fields. The class is fun, interactive and provides students with a variety of unique clinical experiencesWho Can/Should Take the CourseThis is a college level course available to Juniors and Seniors. Students must be 17 years of age by May 10th of the school year the course is taken. Students must be 17 years of age to sit for the EMT Exam. The class is recommended for Seniors as you must have a High School Diploma in order to be fully Certified. Students that pass the certification Exam will receive their full certification upon Graduation from High School. The course is a 2 semester Course so If planning to graduate early the course cannot be taken during senior year. (Juniors in this category are allowed to take the course.) Students that take the course during their senior year may test for their certification but will not receive full credentials until they graduate from High School and turn 18.What To ExpectEMS and the EMT course is a serious class designed to prepare future EMTs to provide emergency care for the sick and injured. Students are expected to take that responsibility and course seriously and with maturity and dedication. This course will be difficult, but it is also a fun and exciting course that is very different from any course you may have previously taken. Students will have an opportunity to participate in clinical ride time where they go to a local EMS service and ride along on actual 911 calls. Students are also provided with the opportunity to visit various departments of the hospital and are allowed to observe as well as practice their EMT Skills in the clinical setting under the guidance of a preceptor. RequirementsNC High School Requirements to take the course(At least on of the following) Public Safety, Health Science 1, Anatomy and Physiology, Biology (other courses may be accepted as pre-requisite pending CTE Curriculum approval)11th Grade English or higher completed or taken concurrentlyMinimal Discipline issues due to clinical ride time and criminal background check(Per industry standard)Must be able to pass a drug screen if requested by clinical site. (Not school affiliated Per industry Standards)11th grade or higher reading level (may be determined by ACT/SAT/PACT/PSAT score, current English course enrolled or other academic testing)Requirements to Test Certify as EMT (Honors Level) -Must meet all previously listed pre-requisits as well as all regular classroom work. -Complete EMT-1 with overall grade of 80 or higher. -Complete EMT-2 with overall Grade of 80 or higher -Completion of Technical and skills Scope of practice exam-Completion of 48 hours of clinical ride and observation time. Students will have a minimum of 10patient contacts (Set up through instructor and local partners within Craven County) Must have own Transportation to and from clinical site-Completion of year long portfolio assignments that will be completed with instructor guidance.-Must have Valid NC ID and submit to criminal background check (No Cost to Student)-Must have or Obtain a Valid NC Driver’s license in order to receive full certification. (May test without having current license if valid ID is available.)Students with DisabilitiesStudents with disabilities limiting them from completing all the physical requirements may register and take the course without discrimination or penalty in accordance with all local, state and federal laws. Clinical time may be adjusted to meet the physical needs of individual students. Certification requirements through NC will be handled by NCOEMS and the instructor or school will not discriminate or limit students testing provided they meet the classroom requirements. All other certification decisions are at the discretion of NCOEMS and out of the Scope of the School System.
