COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course focuses on the culture and physical environments of the world’s geographic regions. It is both a survey course and an introduction to the discipline of geography

Geography: Realms, Regions, and Concepts, 13th Edition, H.J. de Blij and Peter O. Muller, 2008

COURSE RATIONALE

World and Regional Geography (GEOG 1303) is designed to provide the students with the basic knowledge and skills that will prepare them for transfer and success in a baccalaureate degree granting institution and to provide students with a basic knowledge of Geography so as to enhance their everyday life and their chosen careers

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course the student will:

*be able to describe what Geography and World Geography are

*be able to locate and define the major cultural regions of the world

*be able to locate and define the major physical regions of the world

*be able to briefly explain major historical events and the impact of these on World Geography

*be able to describe and know the location and distribution of various economic systems

EXAM 1: “The Americas” (15%)

EXAM 2: “Eurasia” (15%)

*Europe

*Russia

EXAM 3: “Asia” (15%)

*North Africa & Southwest Asia

EXAM 4: “Africa & Oceania” (15%)

*Subsaharan Africa

*Australia & New Zealand

*Pacific Realm

FINAL EXAM: “The World” (40%)

*All Regions (Comprehensive)

*Exam format is multiple choice

*25 questions on Exams 1 - 4

*50 questions on Final Exam

*Final Exam is comprehensive

*Study Guide provided for Final Exam

*Exams 1 – 4 and Final Exam are available at all ACC Testing Centers

*Be sure to take a #2 pencil to the testing center

*Scantron is provided by the testing center

*All exams must be completed by Wednesday, July 7, 2010

Extra Credit (Optional) – World and Regional Geography Slide Show

*Ten (10) points added to your final average

*The extra credit slide show can be any topic in World and Regional Geography: volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, religions, ethnic groups, languages, countries, regional conflicts, economic issues, cities and urban issues, diseases, population and demographic issues, etc.

*Send as an attachment via e-mail or you may post extra credit on a web page, MySpace, or Facebook site – send viewing/downloading information to me

*Must be typed

*Only 1 extra credit paper may be submitted per submission

*No more than ten (10) points of extra credit is available

*Extra Credit can be submitted until the last day of class (Wednesday, July 7, 2010)

*Extra Credit Slide Show presentation:

*Ten (10) photos with a one (1) paragraph description for each photo

*Photos can be from a personal vacation or road trip

Select your ten (10) favorite photos

*Photos may be downloaded from the internet

A virtual road trip or a topic of interest to you

*Slide show must be a topic in World and Regional Geography

Grading Curve:

A = 90 & above

B = 70-89

C = 50-69

F = below 50

COURSE POLICIES

Withdrawal Policy:

Last day to withdraw from class is WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30, 2010

It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw from the class

6 Withdrawal Limit (“6 W Rule”) – students may withdraw from only 6 courses as undergraduate student. Withdrawals follow students to other colleges and universities in Texas. Keep this rule in mind when you consider withdrawing from college courses.
