Batteries are the perfect example of a sub-category that's highly impulsive and consumers expect you to have the batteries they need in stock. In addition, battery sales are up this year in the U.S., being driven by the multitude of new battery-using devices introduced on a near-daily basis.

BIC Still the Leader in Lighters

C-stores are a destination for pocket lighters, and BIC stands above the rest as the market leader in this sub-category. Customers say they trust BIC to be safe and long-lasting. However, it's not just pocket lighters customers are looking for ? utility lighters are a growing segment as well! Two top SKUs in the segment are the Scripto Aim `N Flame and the Scripto Folding Lighter. Both are great for indoor and outdoor use.

EVERYONE Has a Smart Device

This statement might be a little bit of stretch, but not much! 92% of U.S. adults own a smart phone, and 45% own a tablet device. The Telecommunications Hardware sub-category is 2nd only to smoking accessories in average store sales of GM merchandise...and the growth isn't expected to slow any time soon. In fact, as you move down the age bracket continuum, you can see that the number of adults who own a cell phone increases to nearly 100% for the youngest customer group.

Sunglasses: A Natural Fit for Convenience

Purchases for non-prescription sunglasses are typically by impulse or to solve an immediate need, such as a beach trip or long drive. This impulse nature makes them the perfect fit for your c-store.

Make Work Gloves WORK for You!

Although the mild winter may have slowed seasonal sales of work gloves, overall this segment experienced a 4.4% gain. One reason is that consumers are moving away from the low-end products, and are buying higher quality, usage-specific styles. In fact, the average retail price last year for a pair of work gloves was $3.83.

Eby-Brown offers a two-brand strategy for work gloves: Boss as a trusted value brand and CAT, a premium line known as one of the world's leading heavy equipment brands. This strategy satisfies both the value and the name brand shopper.

Impulsive Energy

Energy shots and dietary supplements are technically HBC items, but they're not merchandised that way. These items are highly impulsive and are usually merchandised on counter displays near the register.

This energy shot segment is growing and 5-hour Energy is the leader in market share. Consumers also tend to prefer single bottles versus multi-packs.

THE SUNNY STATS:

55% own three or more pairs of sunglasses 40% report paying more than $15 for their sunglasses in a c-store,

which can contribute to a larger basket size

44% say that finding a brand they recognize and like in a c-store was influential to their purchase.
