Guidelines for the Statement of Reflection on the ENG 194 Portfolio Essay

(For 101 credit students only)

Essays submitted in fulfillment of the English 194 portfolio requirement will be evaluated based on the following criteria. For each item listed below, students should write a paragraph explaining in specific terms exactly how the portfolio essay meets that criterion.

1. In what ways does the essay present a strong and clear thesis or claim?

2. In what ways does the essay present a well-developed and appropriately supported argument that is convincing to its assumed audience? (Please identify audience.)

3. Explain how the essay’s organization, structure and language are appropriate to the purpose of its argumentation.

4. Explain how the essay engages one or more of the following tasks: analysis/ evaluation/ interpretation of texts.

5. Explain how the essay synthesizes, incorporates and integrates sufficient and appropriate evidence.

6. In what ways does the essay employ appropriate voice, tone, and level of formality?

7. What measures have been taken to ensure appropriate control of grammar, syntax, punctuation, spelling, and general mechanical conventions?

8. Explain how the essay demonstrates mastery of at least one system of documentation.

9. Keeping in mind that your essay will be read by outside assessors, explain how your essay addresses audience expectations concerning writing conventions and addresses them in critical ways.

10. How did your thinking about your topic evolve during your work on your paper (from even before you wrote right through the writing process to the final form)? That is, please explain your thinking about your topic including the ways you wanted to develop your argument for your audience.
