Course Description: The purpose of this course is to promote academic excellence in English through the study of world literature and through enriched hands-on experiences in reading analysis, composition, speech, and listening skills.

Methodology: The objectives for this course will be met by providing activities for students to use critical thinking to develop and enhance literary understanding, reading comprehension, and writing ability.

Materials: Students are required to bring to class the following:

A. Electronic tablet or laptop (viewing screen must be 9 inches or larger, must have word processing and internet capability). Please note that all programs and apps used in MDCPS utilize the Microsoft platform. Apple devices often have compatibility issues which result in incomplete assignments, etc. It is highly recommended that students with Apple devices at home rent the school-supplied device for their grade level.

C. Journal (Composition Book)

Daily Class Structure: This course is designed to provide differentiated instruction to meet the needs of every student. In order to provide this instruction, the class will follow the following schedule:

Vocabulary Instruction 10 min.

Language Lab 10 min.

Novel Study 20 min.

Whole-Group Instruction/Reading 20 min.

Lesson Application, Post-Reading, or Writing Activity 30 min.

Grading Policy: All work is graded. After grading, the grade will be posted in the online gradebook. The grading scale used is the M-DCPS grade scale. Some assignments will be worth more than one grade. There will be a minimum of two grades entered each week in the gradebook.

Home Learning: The student may be assigned class novel reading. All home learning reading is followed by a quiz, which will be entered in the gradebook as a home learning grade. Please note that ALL home learning quizzes are worth triple grade value.

Discipline Policy: All school-wide rules will be enforced in this class including rules regarding dress code, tardies, and the use of electronic devices during class. Class rules are those traditionally associated with mature and respectful student behavior. If a student is in violation of any of these rules, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with the Code of Student Conduct and the policies of John A. Ferguson Sr. High School.
