The English Proficiency Exam

AP Credit and IB Credit for English 101

Students may no longer take an English Proficiency Exam on Tulane’s campus just before the start of the fall and spring semesters to test out of English 101.

Instead, if the student has already taken the AP exam in English and earned either a 4 or 5 on it, then that student is exempt from freshman writing. If the student took the English AP exam and received a 3 or lower, then the student must take freshman writing.

Another option: if the student received a 5 on the International Baccalaureate Exam, then that student is exempt from English 101. Any score lower than a 5 on the IB exam means the student must take English 101.
