JUST ARTS AND MANAGEMENT MIDDLE SCHOOLALGEBRA I5638800204470 SYLLABUSTeacher: Ms. Cruz Emails: mcruz@ Course: 8th grade Algebra I Room #: 210 Phone: 305-597-9999 Website: EOC ASSESMENT DATES: MAY TBD Course Description:In this class, students will study linear functions, equations and inequalities, statistical models, solving linear system of equations (through graphing, substitution and elimination), exponential relationships, polynomial operations, and quadratic functions (graphing and solving). The course is based on the focal points recommended by the “National Council of Teachers of Mathematics” and the Common Core Standards. After the EOC, we will move onto inverse, root, cube and rational functions. To be successful in this course you must be prepared for class with all materials, complete all home learning assignments, ask questions when in doubt, and most of all, persevere. Grading Policy:Academic Grade will be based on quizzes, tests, classwork and home learning. STUDENTS MUST SHOW ALL WORK ON HOMEWORK, TESTS, AND QUIZZES TO RECEIVE CREDIT! All the grades are weighted based on the following breakdown: Test and Quizzes 60%Classwork/Projects 30%Home Learning 10%It is the students’ responsibility to keep track of their progress through the electronic grade book. Please, contact the main office to obtain password information. There will be a penalty for any LATE work. Late work will only be accepted (one) class period after its due date. Late assignments will not be eligible for any grade higher than a 79%. After one class has passed the assignment will be given a 0. If students or parents have questions regarding grades, please reach out by email to discuss. Copies of tests will not be distributed as it jeopardizes the validity of the exam. However, a parent teacher conference can be requested to debrief the areas of concern. Home LearningHome learning will be assigned daily and posted in the classroom. It is the students’ responsibility to write their homework in their agendas; DAILY. If a student is absent, he/she is responsible for getting the necessary information from a classmate or from the school’s website. All home learning assignments MUST be completed in pencil and work must be included. This class will follow the penalties for missing home learning in the JAM “Home Learning Policy.” Additionally, homework assignments will be selected at random and given grades for completion. Students are not expected to have correct answers on these assignments, but are expected to show work and put effort into every question. Also, please note that some homework assignments are from online resources such as Khan Academy and Algebra Nation. These assignments must be completed for a grade. Materials to bring daily:Math Textbook2 NotebooksRulerPencils with erasers (NO PENS)Calculator: Texas Instruments – TI – 30Xa - *(This is the only model they will be allowed to use for the EOC.)Note: Students are expected to come to class with their materials. They will not be excused to their lockers during class for missing materials. Please be warned that Ms. Cruz will NEVER give a student a pencil. Bringing a pencil is the very basics of being prepared in middle school. A doctor would not show up to surgery without his medical kit, a police officer would not go out on the job without his badge, and a student should NEVER go to class without a pencil. Classroom Expectations:Arrive on time and be ready to work when the bell ringsRespect yourself and others around you, always.Electronic devices (including smartwatches) are NOT to be used or seen in class. I’ve created a group for star students we call “Precious Metal Society.” After every quarter, students will have the chance to enter the society and have their names posted. Additionally, they will receive the following awards: Silver 80-89%, B – 1 homework pass for next cycleGold 90-97%, A – 2 homework passes for next cyclePlatinum 98-100%, A+ - 2 homework passes for next cycle AND invitation only breakfastHall Passes:Hall passes are issued ONLY in the event of an EMERGENCY and never during direct instruction. If you have a medical condition that requires frequent restroom breaks, your parent/guardian must provide a letter with documentation from a physician.Every second in the classroom is crucial to your learning. With that being said, you should put in every effort to miss as little class time as possible. When you do need to use a hall pass, please wait for an appropriate time to ask (not in the middle of a lesson-but a break between activities). When leaving the room you must pick up the hall pass and will have maximum 5 minutes to return to class. Failure to adhere to this policy will result in losing the privilege of obtaining any hall passes. Academic Dishonesty: Cheating is a serious offense and will not be tolerated. If a student is caught cheating, the student will receive a ZERO for the assignment in addition to a parent/teacher conference.Attendance/ Tardy/Make-up Policy:All school policies governing absences and tardiness will be strictly enforced. If a student is tardy to class 5 times, they will earn after school detention. Regarding absences, students will be allowed to make up missed work while being absent, provided the absence is excused. Upon returning to school; it is the students’ responsibility to provide the teacher with documentation regarding the absence and to check/request any missed work, quizzes, or tests. Absent work must be completed within a week of the absence unless arrangements are made in advance with the teachers. Student Signature: I have read and fully understand the expectations for this course as outlined in this syllabus. Just as Ms. Cruz has agreed to enforce policies fairly and consistently to create a safe learning environment I agree to abide by these expectations, obtain the necessary materials, and work to my full potential so that I will achieve my academic goals for the year.
