According to CompTIA’s IT Outlook 2018, global information technology spending will top $4.8 trillion in 2018, with the United States accounting for approximately $1.5 trillion of the market and 11.5 million tech jobs. CITATION Com18 \l 1033 (CompTIA, 2018). In addition, there were 194,000 new tech jobs added in 2017 CITATION Com18 \l 1033 (CompTIA, 2018). But who will fill these jobs, and what skills, knowledge, work experience, education, and credentials should employees look for? Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 1: CompTIAIdeal Knowledge/SkillsetsThere are too many types of IT jobs to simplify the required IT skills, but most CISO’s should look for applicants with the broadest amount of hard and soft skills possible CITATION Bra07 \l 1033 (Brandel, 2007). IT managers should look for staff with hard skills such as the ability to configure and harden networks. They ideally should have knowledge of cloud security as well as network security. They should have knowledge of Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPS). They should have knowledge of SQL, Ideal Work ExperienceThe ideal IT staff should have at least 2-3 years’ experience working in IT as Help Desk or IT Technician. For the CISO, they should have closer to ten years’ experience in IT, ideally in varying roles and in various settings.Ideal CredentialsThe ideal IT staff that executives should be looking for would minimally be certified in Network Plus, Security Plus. All CISO’s should be certified as CIISP’s CITATION Spi13 \l 1033 (Spiceworks, 2013). Other certifications such as GIAC are acceptable as well. Certifications in cloud security would also be useful. Hardware certifications such as A+ are not necessary, but could be beneficial for a hardware focused position. Ideal EducationFor most IT jobs, such as an entry-level IT Technician job, an Associate’s degree is sufficient when combined with the credentials and other skills listed above CITATION Gen18 \l 1033 (General Dynamics, 2018). Education is important for IT jobs, but not as important as knowledge/skillsets, and work experience. Few jobs require more than a bachelor’s degree. The remarkable thing is that, even with the amount of complexity involved in most IT skills, perhaps the best way to learn these skills is by doing. Work experience or even a portfolio showing coding experience can hold more weight than education. left932100Soft SkillsMany of the articles about IT jobs mentioned the importance of soft skills. A Capgemini and LinkedIn joint report found that there is a talent gap in “soft digital skills” such as “customer-centricity” and “passion for learning” CITATION Cap17 \l 1033 (Capgemini, 2017). The graphic to the left shows several in-demand IT soft skills. Another article I found listed soft skills such as “the ability to translate tech jargon” or “a collaborative mindset” CITATION Hel18 \l 1033 (Heltzel, 2018). These are all soft skills that management should look for in their potential IT staff.ConclusionIn conclusion, executives should look for IT staff with a broad range of hard and soft skills, who have a range of work experience, and who have a solid work ethic. IT candidates should also be willing to continue to grow and learn, as the tech industry continues to evolve. Works Cited BIBLIOGRAPHY Brandel, M.
