Tip Use coloured card for any extra copies of page 3. This makes it easier to sort the cards after use.

Students to work in pairs or small groups as follows:

N2/E2.1 and ESOL learners. N2/E3.1 and ESOL learners. N2/E3.2. N2/E3.2.

N2/L1.1.

Match fractions in words and symbols (page 2) Match fractions in words and symbols (page 3) Place the small cards (page 4) onto the complete wall (page 5) Find equivalent fractions e.g. two of the 1/8 cards equal one of the 1/4 cards (page 4) using page 6 as a guide Use one of each unit fraction (page 4) and order them

Further ideas ? Print page 4 onto acetate and use for group work.

Use a wooden ruler (not a clear plastic one) on the OHP to demonstrate how the equivalent fractions `line up' (or superimpose some of the individual `fraction pieces' from pages 2 or 4 on top of the `wall' on the projector).

Question bank ? You are really hungry. Would you prefer 1/5 or 1/3 of a pizza? ? Grandma's made a fruit cake. You don't really like fruit cake but must have a bit to be polite. Would you rather have 1/8 or 1/10? ? You love chocolate. Would you like 1/2 a bar or 4/8 of a bar?

N2/ E3.1 read, write and understand common fractions (e.g. 3/ 4,2/ 3,1/ 10). N2/ E3.2 recognise and use equivalent forms (e.g. 5/ 10 = 1/ 2).
