Emoney3 The list below reflects the sounds of a lifetime---my lifetime. These recordings grew from a foundation of mostly African American musicians whose work went unheralded and unappreciated before the “British Invasion” introduced that sound to white American audiences. Should you find any inspiration from the list, keep in mind the artists who created and recreated the sound of the period 1960-1980 emulated, if not copied, the blues sound of an earlier period. Beginning with Robert Johnson’s Delta blues guitar innovations and Billie Holiday’s textured vocals, Depression-era music changed sound forever. When guitarists bend strings to alter pitch to reflect pain, suffering, and resolve they honor Johnson, Howlin Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy, BB King, and Chuck Berry. For the serious listener interested in the pedigree of modern sound, access those African American forerunners and have fun crafting your own list. 1960-1980 Music Recommendations with selected song favorites (be ready to sit and listen to compositions not necessarily poppy)United KingdomThe Beatles (Tomorrow Never Knows, Hey Bulldog, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Glass Onion, In My Life, Abbey Road)Yes (Tales From Topographic Oceans, Awaken, Close to the Edge, Heart of the Sunrise, South Side of the Sky, Changes)Rolling Stones (Paint It Black, Sympathy for the Devil, Beast of Burden, Saint of Me, Ruby Tuesday)King Crimson (Starless, 21st Century Schizoid Man, In the Court of the Crimson King, I Talk To The Wind, Red)Emerson, Lake, and Palmer (Take A Pebble, Pictures At An Exhibition, Fanfare For The Common Man, Lucky Man)Pink FloydThe KinksDavid BowieMoody BluesWingsEric ClaptonHumble PieThe WhoElton JohnSteve WinwoodBlack SabbathRod StewartHerman’s HermitsLed ZeppelinCreamJethro TullProcol HarumVan MorrisonThe AnimalsQueenGenesis (Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel)Roxy Music (Bryan Ferry, Phil Manzanera)TrafficThe Zombies/Rod ArgentElvis CostelloBad Co.Tom JonesSteve HillageGentle GiantRobin TrowerJerry and the PacemakersThe Bee GeesJoan ArmatradingUSA/CanadaFleetwood MacTom Petty and the HeartbreakersBuffalo SpringfieldCrosby, Stills, Nash, and YoungLynyrd SkynyrdAllman BrothersEdgar WinterChuck MangioneBruce SpringsteenDr. JohnJimi HendrixSantanaGuess WhoThree Dog NightCanned HeatThe EaglesThe ByrdsBob DylanRare Earth/Peter RiveraChicagoSteely DanJohn MellencampAmericaSimon and GarfunkelJames BrownJudy CollinsThe DoorsJefferson AirplaneThe CarsJ GeilsBilly JoelLittle RichardElvis PresleyChuck BerryBo DiddleyRay CharlesBB KingBuddy GuyMuddy WatersChampion Jack DupreeHowlin’ WolfTina TurnerCarole KingJoan BaezCherJoni MitchellMichael JacksonCredence Clearwater RevivalGrand Funk RailroadWilson PickettMarvin GayeOtis ReddingAretha FranklinGeorge Clinton and Parliament FunkadelicEarth, Wind, and FireWarBrian SetzerIron ButterflyPeter, Paul, and MaryForeignerJourneyCredence Clearwater RevivalEverly BrothersRighteous BrothersJohnny Maestro and the Brooklyn BridgeFrankie Valli and The Four SeasonsLittle Anthony and The ImperialsBobby LewisVanilla FudgeStevie Ray VaughanTaj MahalLoggins and MessinaHuey Lewis and the NewsThe PretendersLoudon Wainwright III (folk comedy)MotownNew ArtistsLast Shadow PuppetsJaime WoonNAOAdeleLaura MvulaLady GagaEmilie SandeLizz WrightSt. Paul and the Broken BonesCharlie WilsonImagine DragonsPaul WellerZuccheroLianne La HavasAnoushka ShankarCurtis HardingNorah JonesFather John MistyBallake Sissoko and Vincent SegalThe Hot SardinesCeelo GreenAlabama ShakesBruno MarsShaun EscoffreyThe ArcsThe Lone BellowMbongana StarKeane (Tom Chaplin)Davina and the VagabondsBlackberry SmokeChiekh LoField MusicSonghoy BluesChristine and the QueensGuy GarveyCaravan PalaceDave Gahan and the SoulsaversBloc PartyTiggs Da AuthorRag'n'Bone ManKandace SpringsKings of LeonProtojeGorillazThe WeekndThe Night SweatsDakhabrakhaUnder The StreetlampEmpire of the SunSamm HenshawJoanne Shaw TaylorRay BLKCommonMichael KiwanukeMoon HoochMelody GardotAla NiSeasick SteveRudimentalMasegoFKJH.E.R.Yolanda AdamsT-PainJack SavorettiMr. SippSouthern AvenueThe Cash Box KingsCage the ElephantMabelThe SpecialsBest Guitar Solos (Standards/Popular)“Stairway to Heaven” “Whole Lotta Love” “Heartbreaker” “Battle of Evermore” Over The Hills And Far Away” (Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin)“Eruption” “Panama” (Eddie Van Halen, Van Halen)“Freebird” (Gary Rossington and Allen Collins, Lynyrd Skynyrd Live)“Comfortably Numb” “Time” (David Gilmour, Pink Floyd)“All Along the Watchtower” “Voodoo Child” “Machine Gun” “Little Wing”(Jimi Hendrix)“Hotel California” (Don Felder and Joe Walsh, The Eagles Live)“Crossroads” “Cocaine” (Eric Clapton, Cream) “Layla” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” (Eric Clapton)“Johnny B.
