PROJECT TEACH TITLE III

WHAT IS PROJECT TEACH?

It is a National Professional Development Title III competitive grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education. It represents a unique partnership created between Southeastern and four Louisiana school districts to address the growing need for qualified teachers of limited English proficient (LEP) students, also known as English language learners (ELL).

WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF PROJECT TEACH?

|( |To improve the quality of teachers who serve limited English |

| |proficient (LEP) students. |

|( |To increase the number of teachers qualified to teach LEP |

| |students. |

HOW MANY WILL BENEFIT

FROM PROJECT TEACH?

Over the five-year funding period, from the fall of 2002 through the fall of 2007, Project TEACH will benefit more than 600 regular teachers and improve the quality of education for more than 1000 limited English proficient students in more than 18 schools. It will also increase the knowledge base and capacity of Southeastern Louisiana University to prepare teachers.

HOW IS PROJECT TEACH

BEING IMPLEMENTED?

Project TEACH targets two different groups:

|( |Approximately 30 regular teachers per year are selected to |

| |participate in professional development classes delivered via |

| |the Internet leading to ESL add-on certification and/or “Master |

| |Teacher” designation. Paraprofessionals already enrolled in a |

| |teacher education program can also apply. |

|( |90 regular classroom teachers per year will participate in four |

| |workshops per academic year. |

WHAT IS PROVIDED BY YOUR DISTRICT AS A PARTNER IN PROJECT TEACH?

|( |Agreement to collaborate in improving the quality of education|

|( |Recruiting and submitting a list of teachers and |

| |paraprofessionals each fall. |

|( |Assistance in organizing training workshops and follow-ups. |

|( |Dissemination of information concerning Project TEACH. |

|( |Collaboration in Project evaluations. |

WHAT DOES PROJECT TEACH FUND?

|( |Tuition and fees for all 4 courses leading to add-on ESL |

| |certification or equivalent courses for Master Teacher |

| |(approximately 30 teachers yearly). |

|( |Stipend for teachers in ESL courses (or equivalent) to purchase |

| |software/texts needed in the courses (approximately 30 teachers |

| |yearly). |

|( |Stipend for teachers in ESL courses to attend a state conference|

| |(LABE or LaTESOL). |

|( |Stipend for selected teachers to present at national |

| |conferences. |

|( |Fees/expenses for consultants/presenters for professional |

| |development workshops. |

|( |Substitute pay for 2 workshop days (fall & spring) for regular |

| |teachers in target schools (90 teachers yearly). |

|( |Stipend for training and instructional materials for 90 regular |

| |teachers in target schools. |

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

Regular teachers who are interested in pursuing

ESL add-on certification and/or an M.Ed. in

C&I (“Master Teacher” designation) must be

willing to:

|( |Sign an agreement to participate in Project TEACH |

| |through their ESL coordinator and |

| |Project staff and participants. |

|( |Apply for admissions to Southeastern. |

|( |Comply with registration procedures |

| |administered by Project staff. |

|( |Fulfill requirements of ESL certification |

| |(12 credit hours) courses or equivalent for |

| |Master Teacher designation. |

|( |Attend a two-day summer workshop on the |

| |campus of Southeastern. |

Regular teachers interested in increasing their knowledge and skills for working with LEP students must be willing to:

|( |Sign an agreement to participate in Project TEACH. |

|( |Participate in a spring (two-day) and fall |

| |(two-day) workshop. |

|( |Purchase materials for use with LEP students (from stipend |

| |amount). |

WHAT ARE THE LONG-TERM BENEFITS?

When you become certified in ESL, you will have:

|( |Earned 12 hours of university credits towards add-on |

| |certification or complete a more advanced degree. |

|( |Increased knowledge and skills in a rewarding area of teaching. |

|( |Enhanced your opportunity for employment. |

|( |Gained access to a growing network of teachers and professional |

| |associations. |

As a regular classroom teacher, you will have:

|( |Acquired methods and strategies for teaching limited-English |

| |proficient students in mainstream classes. |

|( |Improved the quality of education for all students. |
