Laasya Anandeshi Mental Health Education Scholarship 2021 Round 11 January 2021Mental Illness in the United States Sometimes, the worst place you can be at is in your own head – Unknown. Mental illness is a serious matter and our society is not working passionately enough to prevent unwanted chaos. Mental Illnesses are diminishing teens’ future and are the leading cause of suicide, so we should raise awareness by teaching kids from a young age about these risks and how they can seek for help if they believe that they need it.To begin with, mental illnesses are slowly ruining teens’ future. When a child undergoes a mental disorder in their childhood, it is very likely for it to reoccur again in his or her adulthood (Wexler). Approximately, one in five teens who are 13 to 18 years old, experience a serious mental disorder at least once in their age ("NIMH ? Mental Illness"). This is one of the reasons why teens who develop mental disorders in middle school won’t be prepared enough for high school, and teens who develop this in high school have high chances of dropping out. If they aren’t prepared for high school and eventually drop out, then they won’t have a decent amount of education and most likely will struggle throughout life because they don’t have a well-paying salary. To add on, one of the leading causes of suicide in the United States is mental illness. In the United States 45,000 people committed suicide due to mental disorders ("NIMH ? Suicide"). One in five people who are homeless has mental illness, and 20% of people in jail have it too. 35% of these people are being left untreated (Stepman). Suicide is the second leading cause of death among teens in the U.S. ("Gale - User Identification Form"). For example, if a person has severe depression then they will most likely lose their desire of living. This is because they are feeling too much emotional pain, and their only way of ending the pain is by taking their life. In conclusion, we should teach and raise awareness about mental illnesses to students, so that teens futures won’t diminish, and suicide rates will decrease. Some people don’t consider mental illness to be a serious problem because they feel that we are capable of being in control of ourselves. Although, we are in control of our actions and thoughts; we can’t control a chemical imbalance in our brain. Citation "NIMH ? Mental Illness".?Nimh., 2019, . Accessed 28 Feb 2019."NIMH ?
