CLN 4U1 – INDEPENDENT STUDY PROJECT
For this ISP, you will choose a topic related to Canadian Law and write a formal research essay after completing all stages of the research process. The essay is a position paper, not a report on your topic. You must take a position on the topic you have chosen and then use the information from your research to support that position. The essay will have a thesis statement and a body of support for that thesis statement. The research process for the ISP is divided into six steps which are outlined below.
STEP ONE: PROPOSAL (10 marks)
The proposal will include your broad topic, your “narrowed down” topic, an identification of the relevant legal issues, a preliminary research plan, and a preliminary thesis statement.
STEP TWO: PRELIMINARY SOURCE LIST AND SOURCE REFLECTION
The purpose of this list is to ensure that there are sufficient and suitable academic sources for the essay. In the Source Reflection, you will comment on the significance of the sources on your list to your research. (20 marks)
STEP THREE: RESEARCH NOTES (21 marks)
Research notes made from the sources collected in Step Two.
STEP FOUR: ESSAY OUTLINE (30 marks)
The essay outline will include a thesis statement, supporting ideas and examples, and a concluding statement.
STEP FIVE: ESSAY – ROUGH DRAFT (10 marks)
Rough draft of your essay for in-class peer editing.
STEP SIX: ESSAY – FINAL COPY (40 marks)
Final copy of your essay handed in for evaluation in an ISP folder along with all process work.
ISP PROPOSAL
Instructions: Write a proposal for your Independent Study Project (approx. one to two pages, typed, double-spaced) which includes the following information.
1. STATEMENT OF TOPIC/PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
The broad topic chosen from the list of ISP topics should be narrowed down sufficiently for research purposes. Also, describe briefly what you already know about your topic.
2. IDENTIFICATION OF LEGAL ISSUES
Identify the issues within your topic that are relevant to Canadian Law. For “international” topics, identify Canada’s connection to the issues.
3. RESEARCH PLAN
What do you need to find out about your topic/legal issues to support your
thesis?
Also, from where will you gather this information? What types of resources
will you use? How will these resources benefit your research?
4. STATEMENT OF PRELIMINARY THESIS
Formulate a preliminary thesis based on the legal issue(s) you identified in section #2 of the proposal.
This preliminary thesis will “evolve” as the ISP progresses, but it should still express a clear point of view on your topic; i.e. you must take a stand on the issue(s) and be able to support your position with facts from research.
Your thesis must be arguable and “researchable”, and express a clear point of view on your topic/legal issue(s).
*Please HIGHLIGHT the thesis (e.g. bold, italics, underline) on the proposal.
*Hand in the ISP brainstorming worksheet with the ISP proposal.
