FAQ Workshop Cancellations 2020Why is Sitka cancelling summer workshops?Due to ongoing COVID-19 health concerns, we have decided to cancel the 2020 summer workshop season. The health and safety of the Sitka community is our highest priority. Oregon’s advisory restricting recreational and non-essential travel is also informing our decision. Personal health concerns voiced by our instructor and student communities and coastal neighbors also informed our decision, especially concerns from those most at risk. Is Sitka going to be ok? How can I help?As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Sitka relies heavily on revenue from our workshop season to balance our annual operating budget. We are currently projecting an $80,000 budget gap in 2020 due to lost workshop revenue. Many of the expenses associated with bringing you the summer season (like scheduling workshops, producing our catalog and preparing the campus) are incurred upfront. A Payroll Protection Program loan, made possible through the US CARES Act, is helping make up for lost revenue from the first weeks of the pandemic, but it will not be enough to cover our full workshop season losses. One way to help is by choosing to donate a portion or all of your workshop fees instead of requesting a refund. Another way is by making a special gift. With the continued generosity of the Sitka Community we can close this budget gap and prevent financial impacts to next year’s operations. Are Sitka staff and instructors going to be ok? Thanks to a Payroll Protection Program loan, made possible through the US CARES Act, Sitka’s full staff is working remotely at full pay. Additional relief funds are available through the US CARES Act to support self-employed artists and instructors who have lost income due to COVID-19.How long will it take to be refunded or receive a donation letter for tax purposes? We estimate it may take our team up to three weeks to process all of this year’s cancellations. Please be patient as our small team works to serve you. If you are experiencing an urgent financial hardship, please let us know by emailing us so we can expedite your refund. How will my refund be processed? Your refund will be processed the same way as your original method of payment. For instance, if you paid with a credit card, we will reverse the charges and refund will show up on your credit card statement. If you paid with a check, we will send a check to you in the mail. If you have closed the credit card account you used to pay for your workshop, please HYPERLINK "mailto:info@" email us so we can help find an alternative solution. Will my workshop be offered again next year? Will it take place on the same dates? We are working to reschedule as many of this year’s workshops to next year’s season. Dates are subject to change depending on instructor availability and fitting together the 2021 schedule as a whole. I’m scheduled to take a Portland-based workshop in November. Are these cancelled too? No. At this time, only May-September workshops are cancelled. We will make fall workshop determinations later this summer as the COVID-19 situation evolves. I have more questions. Who should I contact? Please contact the Sitka Center staff directly by either email at info@ or by phone at 541-994-5485. ................
