No commitment beyond July will be expected for new ringers (unless you’d like to stay on). In order to get an idea of how many people might be interested in playing this summer, please let Rebekka know either in person, on facebook, by email, or by a note in her church box. WE NEED YOUR HELP

Teachers, professors, public speakers and those who have experience or simply enjoy being in front of small groups of people. WE NEED YOUR HELP as we go through the transitional process of securing an interim pastor and ultimately a new pastor under call. We have two months to develop and practice the simple tasks involved in opening and leading the worship service on Sunday’s in the style in which we are accustomed to. Male or female, young, or not- so young, we need you to help the worship flow so it is meaningful for visitors as well as members. Please let Pastor Paul or Rebekka Ratzlaff know of your willingness to help during this transition.

__________________________________________________________________________________

Definitions of pastor types:

Vacancy Pastor = is paid a monthly fee to be on emergency notice for traumatic life events, funerals, marriages, etc., and to attend the church council meetings for offering guidance. He or she has no responsibilities for worship on Sundays. A congregation has a vacancy pastor as long as they are without an interim or a called pastor. The synod office has assigned Rev. Karen Husby (the current interim at St. Matthew LC in Paducah) as our vacancy pastor.

Interim Pastor = is a temporary pastor who is paid on a full or part time basis to conduct all pastoral duties in a congregation. The primary purpose of the interim is to provide pastoral care as he or she assists the congregation in the transition toward calling a new fulltime pastor. The interim pastor may be in place for 8-18 months, depending on the call process and other factors. The process of assigning an interim pastor will begin after Pastor Paul is officially retired.

Called Pastor = a pastor under contract, voted on by the congregation at a specially called congregational meeting, who resumes all the duties and responsibilities of pastoral care.

June 14th – 21st

Jim Hill and Steve Pumphrey, two seasoned fishermen, have again graciously consented to co-chair this worthy annual community involvement mission event.  Please start spreading the word to your fisher-friends, neighbors, and co-workers, inviting them to donate their catch.  Along with the fish you donate, a special matching grant from Thrivent will purchase chicken to be donated to Marshall County Caring Needline. The Mission of St. Matthew by the Lake:

Sharing Christ’s Love in Worship, Fellowship, and Service

[pic]

[pic]

Every fourth Sunday, members lead our worship with acoustic instruments and singing.

We usually begin with 2-3 songs prior to worship time to warm-up with praise and

thanksgiving. Come ten minutes early and join us! The following is the scheduled

date for our next acoustic service.

June 15th

Acoustic Worship Services

For in this the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’  I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.” (John 4:36-38)

From the desk of the pastor

When Barb and I arrived in west Kentucky to begin our work with St. Matthew by the Lake, the foundation had been solidly laid in Jesus Christ. The seeds of the Word had been planted and nurtured by many others who came before us. And we have reaped so many blessings in the friendships, ministries, and missions we have entered into together.

Prior to our arrival, many people devoted themselves to prayer and gathering together to nurture the bonds of love that support this body we call the church. Without love, there is no presence of God in a church…because God is love. Without ministry and mission, there is no church because the church exists to carry on the work of Jesus in the world. And those who persist in gathering together in the name of Christ will feel connected to the Word and sacraments.

This church will go on long after Barb and I step away from our leadership roles. Why? Because love never fails. It works hard to hold things together. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs…it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres (1 Cor. 13:4-6).

I expect some of the seeds we have cast out and nurtured during our time here will grow. So many of you have matured in your faith and are bearing good fruits in the world. You have allowed the Holy Spirit to do a good work through you. The next pastor(s) to serve St. Matthew by the Lake will reap where we have sown, too. Jesus said, “Trust in God. Trust also in me” (John 14:2) In so doing, you will experience the kingdom of heaven – and the quality of life God desires you to possess.

In Christ’s love,

Pastor Paul

P.S. Paying an interim pastor and then calling a fulltime pastor will require something in addition to your love for God and each other – it necessitates offering the first fruits of your labors in thanksgiving for God’s abundant blessings. The future of this mission depends on you.

June 5-7, Pastor Paul and Barbara, Neil and Joan Weber will be attending the Indiana-Kentucky Annual Assembly in Indianapolis, IN. You will receive a report of the activities that take place in the next newsletter.

Council Members in attendance: Neil Weber, Debbie Schoo, Jean Fuller, John Hudak, Rebekka Handschke Ratzlaff, Jan Kind, Paul Meier, Dottie Hill, Dianne Martinek.

Council Meeting Minutes from April were approved with a spelling correction on Bishop Gafkjen’s name.

Preschool Report: No report submitted – Meeting to take place on May 22, 2014

Pastor’s Report: The Evansville Conference met at St. Matthew by the Lake this past month. We are accepting two new members (Ruth Smith and Carol Teeters). Recent celebrations included Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. Held a memorial for Katie Koch.

Christian Education Report: VBS is being planned for June 26 (tentatively) and will be using the Malaria Project VBS program called “Catch the Buzz”. Volunteers are needed to assist with this one day event. Time is being discussed as 930-130p.

Stewardship: No report submitted

Property Report: Spring Cleaning event is looking for volunteers. Found 4 volunteers to assist with mowing of the grass. They will work on a rotating basis that has already been assigned and is posted in the property room. Project to replace windows has been temporarily tabled until a later time. Research on costs and time lines for replacement of the Exit Sign batteries will be conducted prior to the next board meeting. Bob Kuta will be approached to service the a/c for the church building.

Mission / Ministry Report: Current activity, “Hook’em for the Hungry” is being headed by Jim Hill and Steve Pumphrey. Money for the Malaria Campaign is still being donated. As of this meeting, we have issued two checks to the foundation.

Fellowship: May 31st is the Pig Roast. A 150lb pig will be roasted and we need people to eat it. Roosa’s and Fuller’s have volunteered to assist with table and chair moving. Will need help with set-up and take-down post party. Date for Mamma Mia has been changed to June 27 to accommodate summer schedules of those interested in attending. Group event to the Calvert Drive-in to see broadcast of Jimmy Buffet is being planned.

Worship Board: Research into acquiring a computer for use with the multimedia system is being conducted by Kent Edwards and Scot Ratzlaff. Organist search has begun. We are looking into several different options for temporary coverage and replacement. Rev. Rudy MullerAssistant to the Bishop has agreed to lead worship on Aug 3rd. We have been assigned a vacancy pastor to start Aug 1st, it will be the current interim at St. Matthew in Paducah – Rev. Karen Husby. Rev. Nancy Nyland from the IK Synod office has agreed to lead worship on Aug 10. She will also lead a short workshop to assist with our transition. Channel 8 is no longer being financially supported, so we will lose the cable feed of our service at the end of June. However the worship service can still be seen through a link on the church website.

Financial / Treasure’s Report: April was a better month for donations and we have regained some financial ground. However, we are still short for the YTD. We have reduced our mortgage by $4400 since January. Thanks to the reduced interest rate and generous donations from church members. The first Malaria check mailed was for $1054.

New Business:

-Motion to look for volunteer options for locking up the church on Sundays was postponed until June. Request was made by the Worship Board.

-Procedure to pay for gas for lawnmowers was created. Church Credit card will be used and receipt to be returned to Dianne.

-Mahler’s requested assistance in getting mission donations to their house. Board approved mileage reimbursement to John Hudak to assist with this. Jim Hill can assist with transportation.
