Then tried to yell for help and fight himself lose. Darrel and Sodapop came to rescue him and fought the Socs offOBJECTIVE SUMMARY In S.E Hinton’s The Outsiders, chapter one, a young man named Ponyboy Curtis, who now lives with his brothers because his parents passed, is in a gang called the Greasers that often feuds with a rival gang called the Socs.First, Ponyboy is trailed by a car on his way from the movies. He gets caught by five Socs that get out of the car and start to beat him up. After a while, Darry and Sodapop arrive and save him. Then, Ponyboy talks about Sodapop, Steve Randle, Dally, Johnny, and Two-bit, the members of his gang. He talks about their talents, looks, and how they act. Finally, Ponyboy and Johnny decide to go to the movies with Dally the next night. Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry get home, care for their wounds, and go to sleep.Plot- Most of the events in this chapter would fall under the exposition. In the chapter, Ponyboy introduces the characters to the readers and the conflict emphasizes that the Socs (Socials) are the antagonists in the story.Characterization- Ponyboy: He is the protagonist and narrator of the story. He’s 14 and the youngest of the Greasers. He likes to read and gets A’s in school.Sodapop: Sodapop is Characterized as a happy person who tries to understand everyone. I say this because on page 3, Ponyboy says “Soda tries to understand, at least,” and “He's always happy-go-lucky and grinning.” Sodapop also defends Pony boy whenever Darry yells at him.Darry: Darry is characterized as tough, dangerous, and serious. Ponyboy described him by saying “Darry's hard and firm and rarely grins at all.” He’s the oldest out of the two and is Ponyboy’s and Sodapop’s legal guardian and brother.Figurative language: “scared of his own shadow”- hyperbole- The author used it to show that Johnny is possibly paranoid now, and is extremely afraid of the Socs.“Ears like a lynx” - Simile - Shows that _____ has pointy and/or hairy ears.“I stood there like a bump on a log.” – Simile – shows that he couldn’t/didn’t move“You were bleeding like a stuck pig” – Simile – Emphasizes that Ponyboy was intensely bleeding.Foreshadowing/flashback- Theme- I think one of the themes could be to stick together. In the story, Ponyboy is attacked and everyone comes to save him. In the beginning it also states that Ponyboy’s parents died. He was kicking their chair, calling them names, annoying them, instigating?OBJECTIVE SUMMARY:?In Chapter 2, Johnny, Dally, Ponyboy, and Two Bit meet two Soc girls, Marcia and Cherry at the Nightly Double drive one night. First, Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally go to Nightly Double drive in where Dally spots two Soc girls. Dally goes over there and begins to mess with them by talking loud. At first they ignore him; then, Marcia yells at him which causes him to bother them more. He offers them a Coke, but they decline; however, he goes and gets them one anyways.Next, Johnny comes back from getting a drink and he is a little scared to talk to the girls because he is shy.? Dally comes shortly after Johnny and begins to cause trouble with the girls again. He gives a coke to Cherry and she throws it at at him. He likes that and puts his arm around her but Johnny tells him to stop. That makes Dally mad so he leaves. Cherry thanks Johnny, and Marcia tells Johnny and Ponyboy to stay with them.?Finally, Two Bit comes and scares them which shakes up Ponyboy and Johnny. Cherry asks Ponyboy if Johnny has been hurt and he tells her about the time he was beat up by the Socs one day. Cherry tells Ponyboy all Socs aren’t like that and the group continues to watch the movie.LITERARY ANALYSIS:Plot: The rising action is when Dally messes with the Two Soc girls. That event moves the story forward because Dally is a greaser and he is messing with Soc girls which is going to later cause conflict between the Greaser and Soc boys. Characterization: In chapter two, Ponyboy is characterized as a fourteen-year-old boy who is narrating Chapter two. In chapter two, he says “I started in, talking a little faster than I usually do because I don't like to think about it either.” He is explaining all the evets in chapter two. He is also the youngest out of all the characters in chapter two. In chapter two, Johnny is characterized as an unfortunate boy who has been through a lot of hardships. In the chapter Ponyboy states “We were used to seeing Johnny banged up--- his father clobbered him around a lot”. Johnny was very tough though. He had been through a lot but he still lived his life. He was a little paranoid about some things but he didn’t let that stop him.In chapter two, Cherry is characterized as a beautiful girl who has red hair. In chapter two, she says, “My name's Sherri, but I'm called Cherry because of my hair. Cherry Valance.” Cherry is a really nice girl who isn’t your typical Soc girl.?She tries to persuade Ponyboy that all Socs are not the same. In chapter two, Dally is characterized as a troublemaker. In chapter two, Ponyboy states, “He liked to show that he didn't care whether there was a law or not”. Dally loves to mess with people. He is very nonchalant about other people’s feelings.?He only cares about making himself happy.Figurative language: “Man, your brother is one doll.”- metaphor. It shows that Ponyboy’s brother is a really nice boy. The author uses it to show his brother had a good reputation.? ? “I wouldn't drink it if I was starving in the desert.”-hyperbole. It shows that she was upset. The author uses it to show that the girl was really fed up with Dally.? ? “Dally had turned around and belted him so hard it knocked a tooth loose.”-hyperbole It shows that Dally hit him really hard. The author uses it to show that he was so mad that he took his anger out on someone else. ? ? “His eyes were shut and he was as white as a ghost”-simile. It shows that Johnny was really scared. The author uses it to show that Johnny was so scared that his color disappeared.?Foreshadowing/flashback: Ponyboy has a flashback of when he found Johnny after he was beat up by the Socs. Ponyboy retells the story to Cherry so she can understand why Johnny was so shaken up when Two bit scared them.?Theme: People aren’t always as they seem. Cherry assumed that Ponyboy was just like Dally because he was a greaser and Ponyboy assumed all Socs were alike.?Chapter 3: Alden Fergie and Alexa BrunnerWHO: Ponyboy, Johnny, dally, cherry, Marcia, Two-bit, Soda, Steve, Randy, and BobWHAT: After Cherry and Marcia go home, Ponyboy goes back home to Dally being mad at him and hits him and ponyboy runs awayWHEN: Before- cherry, Marcia, Johnny, two-bit and Ponyboy go to the drive in movie.After- Bob and Randy chased Ponyboy and Johnny at the park and bob tries to drown Ponyboy but Johnny stabs and kills him.WHERE: The drive in, park, Ponyboy’s house, two-bits houseWHY: Dally hit Ponyboy because Ponyboy came home really late and dally was mad at him. Ponyboy then ran awayHOW: Ponyboy ran away because Darry and him got into an argument and Darry hit him.WRITE AN OBJECTIVE SUMMARY:In chapter 3 in The Outsiders, After the Soc girls go home, Ponyboy and Johnny accidently falls asleep and Ponyboy goes home late and ends up getting hit by his older brother and he runs away.First, Cherry, Marcia, Ponyboy, two-bit, and Johnny leave the movies and walk to Two-bit’s house to get his car to take the soc girls home. Then, Randy and Bob, two members of the Soc gang, show up in a blue Mustang and take Cherry and Marcia home. Next, Two-bit goes in for the night and Ponyboy and Johnny go to the lot and accidently fall asleep there. Then, Johnny wakes Ponyboy up and it’s a little bit past 2am. Then, Ponyboy goes home late and Darry is mad and hits Ponyboy. Next, Ponyboy runs away. Lastly, Ponyboy goes back home.LITERARY ANALYSIS:Plot- This chapter is a part of the exposition because it’s still setting things up for the conflict to happen which is in chapter 4.Characterization- Ponyboy: In Chapter 3 I would characterize Ponyboy as Innocent because there are a couple of events in the chapter that support this. One event is when Two bit handed Ponyboy a busted bottle to stab the Socs but he said he would never use it or ever cut anyone. “’I couldn’t use this,’ I said dropping the pop bottle. ‘I couldn’t ever cut anyone….’”.(45). Another event that he was innocent was when Darry hit him and he had never been hit by him before. “Nobody in the family ever hit me. Nobody.”(50).Darry: In Chapter 3, Darry is represented by being hardworking and hard on Ponyboy.(42). Ponyboy talks on how he thinks about Darry. How Darry wishes he could put Ponyboy came home, they go into an argument and he accidently hits Ponyboy. But Ponyboy doesn’t see that Darry actually cares about him. When Ponyboy got home late Darry was worried sick, “I reckon it never occurred to you that your brothers might be worrying their heads off.”Figurative language-“He’s hard as a rock”- metaphor, this tells us about how Ponyboy describes Darry.“He’s got eyes exactly like frozen ice”- Simile, describing Darry’s eyes.Sodapop’s horse is Allison to Mickey Mouse.Foreshadowing/flashback: Flashback- when Ponyboy was talking about Soda’s horse, Mickey Mouse, and how it got sold. That gives the reader more about SodapopTheme: Don’t run away just cause your scared.Chapter 4- Kaylee Towles & Jess LesterWHO: Johnny, Ponyboy, Dally, Socs- Bob, Randy and DarryWHAT: The Socs attacked Ponyboy and Johnny. In defense, Johnny kills Bob, a Socs member, and now Ponyboy and Johnny are on the run from their actions.WHEN: At nightWHERE: The lot and the park?WHY: Ponyboy had asked Johnny to run away with him to cool off.HOW: Darry hit Ponyboy.? In chapter 4 of S.E Hinton’s The Outsiders, Ponyboy and Johnny, two greasers, are running away because Johnny kills someone. They calm down a little from Johnny’s actions. Then, they go to a church on top of Jay Mountain in Windrixville so no one can find them.Ponyboy and Johnny run to the park and Bob and Randy find them. Socs start to drown Ponyboy at a fountain in a park. Johnny kills Bob with his switchblade and the other Socs run away. After Ponyboy and Johnny realize that they will go to jail for killing Bob they go to Dally for help. He gives them a gun and fifty dollars to get a week’s worth of food and tells them not to leave the church for anything.?Plot- It would fall under rising actionCharacterization- Ponyboy: brave, he is brave because he isn’t acting scared when the Socs come towards them 5 to 2 and they’re drunk which scares him. They are coming after him because (in chapter 3) he and Johnny picked up their girls. They try to scare Johnny and Pony but he doesn’t show it and he spits at their feet after saying “You know what Socs are? White trash with Mustangs and madras.” (55) He also kept calm when they tried to drown him in the fountain at the park. He is brave and keeps calm when there’s a problem happening.Johnny: Jumpy- Johnny had a rough childhood, his parents are mean and nasty people which, in turn, causes him to be jumpy at everything. He had also been attacked by the same Socs before. In chapter 4, page 56, when they are jumping Ponyboy and Johnny this causes Johnny to go into “survival? mode.” In the end he ends up killing one of the Socs. When he is about to get jumped Ponyboy sees Johnny shaking and he knows Johnny is terrified.Figurative language- On page 62 “He was as white as a ghost” (simile). Page 63 says “I was hating them enough to lose my head(metaphor). On page 53 “I couldn’t have gotten much cooler without turning into a popsicle”(metaphor). On page 53 “ “Ain’t you about to freeze to death, Ponyboy”(metaphor).Theme- Don’t let your emotions control your actions.Chapter 5- Amanda Buck and Lucas HealyWHO: Johnny, Ponyboy, and DallyWHAT: Ponyboy and Johnny are at the old church after Johnny killed Bob (the socs)WHEN: Before: Johnny killed Bob after he (Bob) almost drowned Ponyboy. After: Dally takes pony and Johnny to a dairy queen, but when they went back to the church it was on fire so Ponyboy goes in to save 5 (I think) kids. And Johnny died in a later chapter because?WHERE: an old church on Jay Mountain (Windrixville)\WHY: Johnny killed Bob and they had to hide.HOW: Cause Bob tried to kill JohnnyOBJECTIVE SUMMARY:In chapter 5 of The Outsiders by SE Hilton, Johnny and Ponyboy are hiding out it an old church. First, Johnny and Ponyboy wake up in the old church the day after Johnny killed Bob. Then, Johnny cut his hair and Ponyboy had to cut and bleach his hair. WHERE:In Windrixville , the burning church.WHY:It was an accident HOW: They left the cigarette still burning. WRITE AN OBJECTIVE SUMMARY:In chapter 6 of The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, Ponyboy, Dally, Johnnycake go through a dramatic change when they accidently leave the church building on fire in Windrixville. At the beginning of the chapter, Dally, Johnny, and Ponyboy are still at the Dairy Queen when Johnny starts talking about turning themselves in. After getting into an argument, they start heading back to the church, only to discover a burning building with kids still inside. Next, Johnnycake and Ponyboy rush inside to the kids’ aid. Soon, all the kids are out of the building safe and sound. Ponyboy was thrown out the window, while Johnnycake got stuck because a big piece of wood fell onto his back, Dally having to pull him out. Once finally out the building, all three boys were rushed to the hospital for immediate treatment. LITERARY ANALYSIS:Plot: In chapter 6 of The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, it Is the climax when Ponyboy, Dally, and Johnnycake are saving the kids from the burning church building and are rushed to the hospital afterwards. Characterization:Johnnycake is characterized as brave in this chapter of the story, for the things he does and the acts he commits: “”We’re goin’ back and turning ourselves in.”” Even though he knew the punishments would be severe, he knew it was the right thing to do. That is brave for the limited options he had. Ponyboy would be characterized as a stupid, but what he did was heroic: “I jerked loose and ran on. All I could think was: We started it. We started it. We started it!” He knew they started the fire, so his decision was to run towards the fire and go save those kids. Running towards the fire was considered stupid to Dally and the other bystanders, but was very heroic for risking his life to save those children.Dally would be characterized as angry, he was mad at how Ponyboy and Johnnycake just ran into the fire: “”What for?”, Dally sounded irritated. “Get back in here before I beat your head in.”” He was already mad because Johnny wanted to turn himself in. Now he’s got to help the out of a burning building. Figurative Language: Hyperbole: “and Soda had in bear hug”. Bear hug is exaggerated for how big or hard Soda hugged Ponyboy.Imagery: ”The church was on fire!” It lets you picture a burning building. Diction: “Dally cussed under his breath and nearly tore out the transmission of the T-Bird,”Dally chooses to curse a lot, as a way of expressing his emotions in a bad way. Dialect: “Blast it, Johnny,” In the day and age, nobody uses ‘Blast it’, so it gives way that this is another period of time.Theme:Stand out and be different, you don’t have to follow in everybody’s footsteps. This theme explains how Ponyboy was different than the others in the gang. He thought differently than the others. He wasn’t much of a hoodlum as he thought.Chapter 7 (Micah Smiley) and Kaly KingWHO: Johnny Ponyboy Sodapop Dally Darry?WHAT: Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry are in the nurses waiting room waiting to hear the results on how Johnny and Dally are doing from the injuries they had in the fire.?WHEN: Before: Darry and Sodapop comes along with news reporters comes to see Ponyboy at the nurse’s office. Darry and Sodapop are very emotional and they wait to see how Dally and Johnny are doing. After: Randy talks to Ponyboy about the death of Bob and tells him how a good thing he did when he and Johnny saved those kids in the burning church. He also lets him know that he will not be going to the rumble.WHERE: The main setting in chapter 7 takes place in the Nurse office.?WHY: The reason Ponyboy and his two brothers are waiting in the nurse’s office is because they came to see how Johnny and Dally are doing.?HOW: How this happened and how did Ponyboy and his brothers got to the nurse’s office here started by when they were leaving the church in Windrixville caught on fire so Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally had saved the children but was injured badly and taken to the hospital.?WRITE AN OBJECTIVE SUMMARY?In S.E Hinton, “The Outsiders”, Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry wait to hear from the doctor about Johnny and Dally’s injuries. Chapter 8- Natalia Ramos, Shawn ThompsonWHO: Johnny, Two-Bit, Cherry, Dally, and PonyboyWHAT: When Ponyboy and Two-Bit went to the hospital to see Johnny then Johnny passed out. WHEN: Right before the big rumble. After the church fire they had to go to the hospital because Johnny had gotten severely burned. WHERE: At the hospital.WHY: Johnny went to the hospital because he got severely burned from the fire at the church. HOW: Johnny got trapped in the church fire because he pushed Ponyboy outside and the church collapsed with Johnny in it because he tried to save Ponyboy.WRITE AN OBJECTIVE SUMMARY:First, the nurses that were taking care of Johnny wouldn’t let Ponyboy and Two-Bit see Johnny, but finally, Johnny told the nurses that were taking care of him to let Ponyboy and Two-Bit in to see him. Johnny acted very stoic to show that he was not in pain even though he was so that Ponyboy and Two-Bit wouldn’t get sympathetic.Then, Johnny asked Two-Bit for the book Gone with the Wind so Ponyboy could read it to him. When Ponyboy and Two-Bit were about to leave Johnny’s room Johnny passes out and then wakes back up again. The nurse comes in and says to Johnny that his mother is here to see him. Johnny gets upset and says that he doesn’t want to see his mother. Ponyboy and Two-Bit then leave Johnny’s room and go to the next floor of the hospital and on their way they run into Dally who was arguing with the nurses. Ponyboy and Two-Bit started talking to Dally, and Dally askes Two-Bit for his prized possession knife so Two-Bit gave it to Dally. Dally says that they are going to fight good tonight at the Rumble.After, they get done talking with Dally, Ponyboy and Two-Bit run into Cherry and Cherry starts talking about the Rumble. The events in chapter 10 keep it moving forward by the amount of escalation and action from big characters dying. Characterization: Ponyboy – Very caring for his friends, “Where’s Soda?” “You kept asking for me (Darry) and Soda. Sometimes for Mom and Dad, too. But mostly for Soda.” Soda – Willing to defend his friends at all costs, very caring. Always worried about them. “Hey, Ponyboy!” he yelped, and leaped for me. "You got a concussion from getting kicked in the head. Soda saw it. He landed all over that Soc. I've never seen him so mad. I think he could have whipped anyone, in the state he was in.” Darry – Guardian, defendant of his friends. “No rough stuff, little buddy.” Dally – low-tempered, willing to die to be with his friends. After Johnny died, Dally robbed a grocery store and got shot dead by the cops.Figurative language: “I walked down the hall in a daze.” It’s an example of imagery. It also shows that Ponyboy either was sick or had a concussion. Although, it turned out to be both. “He finally broke,” is an example of a metaphor because it’s a comparison without like or as. Each one of them were questioned but Ponyboy he was questioned about his home life.Next, Ponyboy isn’t doing too good in school. His grades started to drop. He used to have great grades but ever since the accident he has changed.Finally, Ponyboy had to do his schoolwork but he did something else he left his house. He eventually came back home to do his schoolwork to help his grades.LITERARY ANALYSIS:Plot- Resolution, because Ponyboy and the others had to go to the hearing. To see who was guilty about Bob’s death. Ponyboy wasn’t questioned about Bob but he was question about his home life because Darry is his guardian. Darry is also included in the hearing.Characterization- Ponyboy is very uncooperative, “I was lousing up my schoolwork, too” (p.144). Darry is helpful, “I didn’t do too badly in math, because Darry checked over my homework in that and usually caught all my mistakes and made me do it again, but in English I really washed out” (p.144). Two-Bits is caring, ”Steve and me were backing you, but I guess we didn’t need to”(p.146). Soda is caring, “ You’re not going to drop out”.Figurative language- simile: “I used to eat like a horse, but all of a sudden I wasn’t hungry”.
