Shelsey BraswellSuzanne WeldenbergerIntroduction to Popular CultureNovember 2, 2014 Are you a Skeptic? There are very few skeptics in today world. Everyone simply believes what one says and don’t bother to research the truth in that one person or company claim. It’s sad really. To make it more clear, I’ll explain what a skeptic is so no one is confused. A skeptic is someone who inclined to question or doubt all accepted opinions. They don’t simply accept what is handed to them like ‘ the Earth is flat’ and just live it at that. No, they go and found their own evidence to base their conclusions on. Some famous Skeptics are Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage. You probably don’t recognize the names but they’re the Discovery Channel very own “MythBusters”! Yes, ladies and gentlemen there is a show that is all about using critical thinking. Well they mostly use science, but you can’t perform a reliable experiment without critical thinking. As the title of the show will explain these two guys are professionals in the field of special effects and things related to science. These guys mission in life is to “Bust” “Myths” while entertaining the audience, mostly by their personalities. These myths could be from the movies or from things like “Do bigger tits equal better tips?” They are simply urban myths and Hollywood cliche’ that people have claim to be true or possible and try to either disprove or prove these myths. The process they use in the show is the Scientific method. The Scientific Method is a guide to how to do science. They ask questions on what they want to discover, “Do big boobs bring in more money then small boobies?” Then they make predictions on what could happen. They then set up the experiment to determine if their predictions for the “Myth” come true. They keep detail records and come to a conclusion. If their prediction failed then they ask why isn’t it true or what would happen if we went to the extremes. As I have explained they use the scientific method to mode their experiments and their findings on. This process is similar to what we see in Critical Thinking: An Introduction 2nd Edition by Alec Fisher. Over the course of the book, the author explains how to identify reasons, how to resource the credibility, and to try not to assume things on what you hear or see. On the show of “MythBusters” they practice these skills to make sure everything that is in the movie or the urban myth is as close to the source as possible to replicate and to see if it is possible or not using similar skills that our class book explains we should use. The show promotes critical thinking in a more side-step way. The stars of the show are more focused on the science of their case, they won’t break stuff down like the book does on how to use critical thinking in our everyday life. But they well explain the science behind what they are doing. If its cliché or urban myth is possible the audience would understand logically how they came to their conclusion. If it is wrong they explain using reasoning (a critical thinking tool) to explain why they failed to prove the myth true. ................
