Survivor Argumentative Paragraph Practice

Thinking about the survival texts we’ve read so far: Lane Wallace’s essay, “Is Survival Selfish?”, Laurence Gonzales’s Deep Survival excerpt, Rob Cantor’s poem, “Shia Labeouf”, Marilyn Chin’s poem, “The Survivor”, Jimmy Santiago Baca’s poem, “Who Understands Me But Me,” write one strong counterclaim/counter argument paragraph responding the prompt below:

Prompt: Agree or disagree: A survivor is someone who lives through a life or death situation.

1. Gather some examples to use as evidence from the texts we’ve read so far. These examples can be paraphrased bullet points—no need to use direct evidence for this activity.

2. Record a claim based on the examples you came up with.

3. Write a paragraph with a counterclaim/counter argument someone might come up with to counter your claim. Use one of your reasons as a refutation/rebuttal to the counterclaim/counterargument. Include evidence to support your refutation/rebuttal.

Set up your paragraph like the example below, be sure to label or highlight your sections in either the left or right margin:

Example:

2. Claim: A survivor is more than someone who lives through a life or death situation because not all survival situations need to be life or death such as going to school, living at home, and living in society.

3. Paragraph:
