Alec is considering taking up boxing as a form of self-defence.

Davie reveals that he believes that Alec is destined for a better life because he is intelligent.

The audience then bare witness to the difficulty of Alec’s arithmetic exam.

Ian tries to reassure him that not getting into the school would be a good thing.
