Name:_________________________________

Lab 1 ? Inertia Materials: Needed: Beaker, index card, penny Procedure: 1. Place the index card over the opening of the beaker. 2. Place the penny in the middle of the index card. 3. Thump, flick, or pull the index card as quickly as possible. Data: 1. What happens to the index card?

2. What happens to the penny?

3. How does this show that objects at rest want to stay at rest?

4. How does this demonstrate Newton's first law of motion?

Lab 2 ? Blowing Marble Materials: 1 straw, 1 golf ball, 1 marble Procedure: 1. Place the marble on the table. 2. Blow through the straw directing air at the marble. 3. Try blowing the marble at different angles. 4. Repeat with the golf ball. Data: 1. When the marble is at rest what happens?

2. When a force is applied in the opposite direction of the marble's velocity, what happens?

3. When a force is applied in the direction of the marble's velocity, what happens?

4. How could you make the marble turn left or right?

5. Once the marble has velocity, what will happen if no further force is applied? Why?

Lab 3 ? Balloon Rocket Materials: balloon, straw, tape, piece of string Procedure: 1. Measure string from index finger to index finger of one member of group and cut. 2. Attach one end of the string to the table. 3. Thread straw onto unattached end of string. 4. Inflate the balloon. 5. Hold inflated end of the balloon closed while a partner tapes the balloon to the straw with two pieces of tape. 6. Release inflation end of the balloon. Data: 1. What happened when the balloon was released?

2. Why does the balloon rocket explain Newton's Third Law of the Motion?
