EXCEL PRACTICE EXERCISES

EXERCISE 1:

CREATING A CHART

Enter the following data into an Excel spreadsheet:

In the column labeled “A” enter: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December

In the column labeled “C” enter:

Average Temperature:

January was 15°

February was 27°

March was 45°

April was 58°

May was 64°

June was 72°

July was 79°

August was 83°

September was 78°

October was 57°

November was 42°

December was 33°

In the Column labeled “D” enter:

Total Precipitation

January got 18"

February got 12"

March got 32"

April got 29"

May got 21"

June got 6"

July got 10"

August got 15"

September got 12"

October got 8"

November got 10"

December got 10"

Create Charts from the Data

Chart 1:

Create a Column chart that shows JUST the Average Temperature. Make sure you label and title your chart by going into “Chart Layout” and selecting a layout that will allow you to do this.

Chart 2:

Create a Chart that shows the JUST the Total Precipitation. Make sure to include the labels on your chart and a title. Name the chart "Total Precipitation". Format the chart with the colors, shape effects, and background fill of your choice.

EXERCISE 2:

WORKING WITH FORMULAS

In this exercise you will gain experience working with formulas. You will do this by managing a bank balance and tracking expenses as an example.

Billy Bottom has been having trouble managing his expenses and bank balance lately. He has asked you to help him set up a table in excel which shows the transaction made, his expenses, and any money that he has deposited for the month.

Week 1: Starts off with $550 in his bank account and makes a deposit of $50.

Week 2: Buys his lunch every day and ends up spending $50 on that alone.

Week 3: Buys supplies for school costing $25

Week 4: makes a deposit of $100 and also pays $150 towards his line of credit.

Create a table by entering:

• In Cell A1 type: Week

• In Cell B1 type: Description of item

• In Cell D1 type: Expense

• In Cell E1 type: Deposit

• In Cell F1 type: Total Balance

Select Row 1 and format the labels bold and centered

Under columns A-E enter the information regarding Billy’s finances above.  If there are two transactions taking place in one week you may list them twice.

| |A |B |D |E |F |

|1 |Week |Description of Item | Expense | Deposit  | Balance  |

|2 | 1 |Deposit | | $ 50.00 |  |

|3 | | | | | |

|4 | | |  | |  |

Calculations:

In column “F” you are going to calculate the total balance for every week using a formula and then do a final total of the expenses and deposits for the month using the correct formulas in Excel.

Formulas:

Subtraction: When you are subtracting two numbers you must use the formula “IMSUB” to calculate the differences between two numbers:

=IMSUB (number 1, number 2)

Enter the above formula in the cell that must show the total once you have subtracted two numbers. Number 1 and Number 2 are to be replaced with the numbers that you are subtracting.

Addition: When you are adding two numbers you must use the formula “SUM” to calculate the addition of two numbers:

=SUM (number 1, number 2)

Enter the above formula in the cell that must show the total once you have added two numbers.

Now make a graph of this information comparing Billy’s expenses and deposits over the four weeks.

EXERCISE 3:

| |You are the owner of a fruit store; you have owned the fruit store for one complete year. Use the data below to construct a spreadsheet to|

| |display the sales figures for the first year of operation of your fruit store. |

| |Enter data below for the three fruits into excel. |

| | |

| | |

| | |

| |Create a formula to calculate totals for each month for all three fruits. |

| | |

| |Create a formula to calculate totals for each fruit item at the end of 12 months. |

| |Create a graph which compares the sales of the three fruit over the 12 months. |
