STATISTICS

These are the top ten final scores for the combined results of the Ladies' Figure Skating event at the 2010 Winter Olympics:

Yu-Na Kim 228.56

Mao Asada 205.50

Joanie Rochette 202.64

Mirai Nagasu 190.15

Miki Ando 188.86

Laura Lepisto 187.97

Rahail Flatt 182.49

Akiko Suzuki 181.44

Alena Leonova 172.46

Ksenia Makarova 171.91

a) Find the mean, median, and sample standard deviation of these scores.

b) Yu-Na Kim of South Korea shattered the world record with a score 18 points higher than the previous record. How would the mean and median of this group change if we left out her score?

On your first four Differential Equations tests you earned 85, 80, 95, and a 65 (hey, anyone can have a bad day). What must you earn on your next test to have a mean score of at least 80?

These are a sampling of the scores from last week's Organic Chemistry test:

90, 94, 53, 68, 79, 84, 87, 72, 70, 69, 65, 89, 85, 83, 72

You earned a score of 72. Your mom asks you how you did on the test compared to the rest of the class. Calculate the average and decide what to tell your mom.

ECONOMICS

FOR ALL ECONOMICS PROBLEMS, Draw a timeline, accurately labeling dates and amounts paid/received over each interval

-Today, you have a savings account of $17 000. Based on an annual interest rate of 3.9%, what equal amount can you withdraw from the account at the end of each month for 4 years and leave $3000 in the account? If the interest rate was 6.5%, what would the monthly withdrawals be?

Your parents have agreed to lend you $40 000 to help you pay for college. As such, they do not expect you to repay the loan or any interest until you have obtained your 4-year degree and worked for 8 years. At the end of that period, they expect to receive a lump-sum payment of $75,000.

a) What equivalent annual interest rate are your parents charging you for the use of your money?

b) If your parents could not lend you the money and you have to borrow the $40 000 at 5.3% annual interest, what would the lump-sum payment be at the end of the period?

-After school, you begin to save for retirement. Let’s say that you want to put $400 per month into a retirement account that gives you 1.2% annual interest, compounded quarterly. How much will you have at the end of 35 years?

-You have decided to invest part of your annual salary in the stock market at the end of each fiscal year. Starting today, you will invest $4 500. For the next 7 years, you expect that you will get a 6% annual raise yearly and you will increase the amount you put into the stock market at the same rate. Assume that you deposit yearly for the next 7 years.

a) What is the present worth of your investments if the stock market yields a 12% annual rate?

b) What is the present worth if the market only yields a 7.3% annual rate?

A “prebreaker” is a machine used in meat processing that augers the bones and sinew from the cut floor into a large machine and grinds the offal for further processing into grease. Your company is deciding between two machines available for purchase, and has tasked you with deciding which machine to install. The specifications of the machines are as follows:

Haarslev Prebreaker: $1 100 000 purchase and install, $24 000 yearly operating and maintenance costs, $261,000 salvage value, expected to last 7 years

Brentwood Prebreaker: $2 100 000 purchase and install, $11 500 yearly operating and maintenance costs, $310,000 salvage value, expected to last 14 years

If you need the machine to run for 14 years, which machine do you recommend for purchase? (Assume the annual interest rate is 6%, and the replacement cost for each machine goes up 3.5% yearly)

MATERIAL BALANCES

FOR ALL MATERIAL BALANCES, make sure to follow correct engineering format (diagram, ‘Given,’ ‘Find,’ etc.)

A 10 gallon fish tank contains 2 percent salt. How much dry salt must be added to bring the salt concentration to 3.5 percent by weight?

Two methanol-water mixtures are contained in separate tanks. The first mixture contains 40.0 wt% methanol and the second contains 70.0 wt% methanol. If 200 kg of the first mixture is combined with 150 kg of the second, what are the mass and composition of the product?

Methanol is produced by reacting carbon monoxide and hydrogen. A fresh feed stream containing CO and H2 joins a recycle stream and this combined stream is fed to a reactor. The reactor outlet stream flows at a rate of 350 mol/min and contains 10.6 mol% H2, 64.0 mol% CO, and 25.4 mol% CH3OH. This stream then enters a cooler in which most of the methanol is condensed. The liquid methanol condensate is withdrawn as product, and the gas stream leaving the condenser-which contains the CO2 and H2, as well as 0.4 mole % uncondensed CH3OH vapor-is the recycle stream that combines with the fresh feed. Determine the production rate of liquid methanol.

ENERGY BALANCES

(Dr Heinen’s Class ONLY)

How much work can be obtained from an adiabatic, continuous-flow turbine, if steam at 60 bar and 500oC is used and the outlet stream is at 1 bar and 400oC? (Assume a flowrate of 100 kg/hour)

Enthalpies: Inlet: (60 bar, 500C) H1 = 3422 kJ/kg

Outlet: (1 bar, 400C) H2 = 3278 kJ/kg

How much heat must be removed per hour from a heat exchanger designed to condense 1 kg/min of steam at 200oC and 1 bar to saturated liquid?

Enthalpies: Inlet:        (1 bar, 200oC)                    H1 = 2875 kJ/kg

Outlet:     (1 bar, saturated liquid)       H2 = 417.5 kJ/kg

Approximate each situation below as approximating a closed or an open system and write the corresponding energy balance.

(i) A river.

(ii) The interior of a closed can of soda.

(iii) The interior of a closed refrigerator that is turned on.

(iv) The interior of a closed refrigerator that is turned off.

VBA

-Write a VBA program that will pull information from a file named “data.txt”. The first line of the file is the number of data points in the rest of the file.

The program should read the sequence of numbers and square them, then output each number to another file named “data2.txt”

-Write a VBA program that asks the user for the coefficients of a quadratic polynomial and outputs the determinant, number of roots, and the values of the roots.
