How to make a line graph in Microsoft excel:In box A1 put your label for your X axis condition. Underneath that label start to enter your condition into column A. (I used time in 2 year increments from 1978-2006 as my condition)26879551848140023177536258500Set up your Y axis label in B1. Below it enter your corresponding data. (I used the numbers from the world average CO2 from the graph below)81851560454800If you generate a line graph right now you will only have one line of data. To do this you need to select only the Y axis data from column B. Click on the “Insert” tab and then “charts”, then select the appropriate graph. I like the first one. It will look like this:**If you want to have more than one set of data on your graph then do not generate a graph yet. Skip to step 5.**140525575472100Notice that the x axis does not have your dates. You will need to change this. Do this by right clicking on the graph and selecting “select data”. In the horizontal category you will need to click “edit” and type in your years individually separated by commas. Only do this if you want to represent one set of data otherwise move onto the next step. Once you do that it will look like this:30570995136300045037559551600If you want to add another set of data you will add the label in box C1 with the data in the C column below it. (I used extent of Arctic Sea Ice in millions square kilometers) This is what is will look like:In order to put both sets of data in a chart, select both columns of data and then click on the “Insert” tab. Then select “charts” and then the appropriate line graph. Again, for this one I like first one because it’s easy to use. At first it will look like this:1290955254000 In order for you to have two y-axis variables, select the chart and it will bring up a “Chart Tools” tab and then select the “Layout” sub-tab. It looks like this:3302758-4947031305520383500On the Format tab, in the Current Selection group, click the arrow in the Chart Elements box, and then click the data series that you want to plot along a secondary vertical axis. (For this graph it is series 2)On the Format tab, in the Current Selection group, click Format Selection.NOTE If a different dialog box is displayed, repeat step 1 and make sure that you select a data series in the chart. On the Series Options tab, under Plot Series On, click Secondary Axis and then click Close.A secondary vertical axis is displayed in the chart. This is what it will look like:10099345679000To change the display of the secondary vertical axis, do the following:On the Layout tab, in the Axes group, click Axes.Click Secondary Vertical Axis, and then click the display option that you want.To change the axis options of the secondary vertical axis, do the following:Right-click the secondary vertical axis, and then click Format Axis.Under Axis Options, select the options that you want to use.You will need to make sure that you have proper titles for all axes and a graph title. You may need to insert a text box (or two) to properly label all axes. Also, notice that the x axis does not have your dates. You will need to change this. Do this by right clicking on the graph and selecting “select data”. In the horizontal category you will need to click “edit” and type in your years individually separated by commas. 90040279846100You will also need to edit the Series title in the legend. To do this you will need to right click on your graph and click on “select data”. On the right side of this box under “Legend Entries” click on the series that you want to change the title for and then click “edit”. You can then type in the new name under “series name”. When you are done with the last three steps, it should look like this: How to make a pie graphIn box A1, enter the label for the variables that you are going to compare in ratios. Enter the available data in column A.70929548577500348016048666600In box B1, enter the label for the data that you are going to use to make up the ratios. Enter the data for each corresponding variable in column B. It should look like thisSelect the data and the names and then click on the “Insert” tab. Then select chart and click on pie graph. I like the one that shows the name and percent in the slice. It should look like this:14876067344200320704453660300In order to see the smaller numbers for this particular graph I need to select a different graph type. To do this right click on your graph and select “change chart type”. I am selecting the highlighted type of pie graph seen here:2483485655955You graph should then look like this:3676654572000Make sure you properly title your graph! Like this: ................
