An effective way to see a relationship in data is to display the information as a scatter plot. A scatter plot shows how two variables relate to each other by showing how closely the data points cluster to a line.

For this project, you will be examining top score of the past Summer or Winter Olympic Games. You will be completing two scatter plots of comparative sports. (For example, you may choose one scatter plot of Men’s 500 freestyle and one scatter plot of Women’s 500 freestyle.) You may use newspapers, magazines, or internet sites to find accurate data.

For each sport you must:

1. Display the top scores for the last 12 Summer/Winter games in the form of a table.

2. Graph a scatter plot with the years and top scores for that sport. Label both axes and create an appropriate scale. Title your scatter plot.

3. Find a line of best fit for the scatter plot and graph the line of best fit using 2 coordinates.

4. Determine what type of correlation exists (if any) for both plots.

5. Make a prediction about the top score for the next Olympics in that particular sport. The Olympics in 2036?

6. Write a summary paragraph describing the sport you chose, the scatter plot you constructed, what type of correlation exists, and what the data signifies.

7. Plot a residual Plot and discuss what the significance is.

8. Identify and interpret the slope and y-intercept of the LSRL.

** Scatter plots can be hand drawn or you can use other technologies like EXCEL. **
