The Met is set up into galleries. Every exhibit is divided into many galleries in which there is an explanation of all of the art work, artifacts and structures. There is an explanation for every gallery and every piece. This will aid you in creating your project.
REQUIREMENTS:
(Two typed pages of size 12 Times New Roman Font, double spaced)
1. Visit any ONE of the exhibits listed below; go through all the galleries of that exhibit.
A. Ancient Egypt
B. Greek and Roman Art
C. Ancient China – Asian Art
D. Ancient Near Eastern Art and Islamic Art
E. Medieval Arms and Armor
2. We discussed in class the job of an archaeologist. Now you are going to put yourself in their shoes as you explore the museum. Write a first person account of what you have “discovered” on your archaeological experience.
3. Be creative and be specific. An archaeologist would not describe objects from ancient times with boring adjectives like big, small, or cool. Use a Thesaurus!
4. Have some fun. It is encouraged that you create a back-story to where you are going and who you are. Tell me a little about yourself as an archaeologist and create a fun storyline to keep the reader enticed. Example: someone could be chasing after you, you could be racing against the clock, a friend could betray you, etc. Be creative while still learning and recording factual data.
5. Also, include the information gathered from the museum display into your “findings”. Example: “I have just discovered an ancient, stunningly decorated Egyptian Sarcophagus from the Middle Kingdom.” Really analyze the details of what you see.
6. RELATE it to class! This can be done for the Egypt, Greece, and possibly the Roman exhibits because we will cover these topics before the due date. Link things you have discovered in the museum to things you have learned about in class. If you choose another exhibit (from the list above) then use the textbook to help relate.
7. Include pictures of the things that you saw. Some pictures are available online. Remember, no flash photography is allowed! You could write your report and include the pictures in it as the story progresses. However, there should still be a full two pages of typed work. Photos of you at the museum are encouraged and make for great evidence that you were actually there.
8. Make a creative cover for your report showing your experience, including your name, period and title.
9. Go with your friends. Make a day out of it and go experience one of the world’s finest museums for yourself!
**** When you pay your entrance fee at the museum, be sure to get a receipt and save it. The button you receive does not count. Place this receipt on the back of your front cover (tape it, staple it). This will be proof to me that you actually visited the museum. I need to see proof of your visit for you to receive any credit.****
Things to remember:
1. No flash photography allowed at the site. Most cameras have the non-flash option. Otherwise you may have to buy postcards or visit the website for pictures.
2. Be sure to have a means of recording what you see (a notebook, pen, tape recorder). Remember, chances are you will forget what you saw between the time you see the exhibit and write the report. Seriously, write it down.
3. Do not plagiarize. This story should be written in the first person and incorporate facts which you have learned not copied off of the internet. If you are unsure about it – email me. Any honor code infractions result in a grade of ZERO. In other words it’s not worth it!
4. The project is worth 15% of your grade and you can earn extra credit by going above and beyond the requirements and receiving an A+
5. Get out there! Don’t wait to the last minute- that is when problems arise and you do not have time to correct them.
6. See/ Email me if you have any other questions.
