2013-2014

2011 - 2012

Welcome to 7th Grade Math!

Together we will have a great year becoming better problem solvers, sharpening our basic skills, and learning many new concepts.

My goal is to make math understandable, interesting and FUN for you.

This syllabus will answer many of your questions about how this class works: what you need to bring to class, how you’ll be graded, and just some general classroom procedures that will make the class run smoothly. Please read through it with your parents, and bring it back signed no later than Monday, September 9th.

How will I be graded?

Your grade will consist of the following pieces:

Homework: Homework is assigned at the end of each lesson to practice the new material.

Quizzes: There will be 1 to 3 quizzes per unit

Problem Sets: These are take-home

assignments that review prior material.

Tests: Tests are given at the middle and end of each unit.

Projects. There will be 1 project assigned per unit.

Quarter Grade = 25% Problem Sets

25% Quizzes and Projects

50% Tests

Final exam = 20% of your grade.

Average = 4 quarters + final

5

What will I need for class?

Books: Glencoe Mathematics Course 2 and NYS Coach Book. The book will be kept in class as most of our assignments will be worksheets. The Coach Book is a workbook that will be used in and out of class.

Binder: You will need a 2-3 inch binder where you will keep guided notes,

worksheets, and review sheets.

Writing Utensil: I would prefer a pencil.

Calculator: Texas Instruments TI30XIIS scientific calculator

If you have any trouble getting these materials, please see me as soon as possible so we can make sure you are prepared for class.

Be Responsible

Notes: Guided notes will be given daily and you will be expected to complete them.

When you are absent, be sure to get a copy of notes given that day.

Review notes regularly as old material will show up on tests throughout the year.

Homework: You will have an assignment almost every night. You will also have problem sets that are longer take home assignments. These will be graded. When you are absent, assignments must be made up. If you are having difficulty with an assignment, seek me out during lunch or a study hall. Homework is not a punishment but is meant for practice.

Be Respectful

Only one person speaks at a time. Please do not make fun of anyone who is asking a question. Use appropriate language. There are many words that are not “bad” or “swear words” that still are not appropriate for school. Please do your best to show behavior that is respectful of yourself, your teacher, and your peers.

Need Help?

I will make time to provide help to you whenever you ask for it. The most important thing is that you don’t wait until the day of a test or quiz to tell me you don’t understand what you are doing because by then it is too late. This is especially important when you are absent. Take the first step in asking for help and it will pay off.

School Rules!

All school policies including dress code, wireless communication devices and attendance will be strictly followed. Please make sure you are familiar with the handbook so we do not have any miscommunications.

Let’s make this a great year together!
