NR 500- Week Three Assignment Overview Recording TranscriptSlide 1:Hello and welcome to the NR 500 week three assignment overview. My name is Allison Sabin, and I am the course leader for NR 500 Foundational Concepts and Applications. This assignment is due by 11:59 pm MT, Sunday night, at the end of week three.Slide 2:The objectives of this assignment overview is to describe the purpose of the week three assignment, and to discuss the grading rubric requirements for the week three assignment. Before we begin, I would like to encourage you to locate the week three assignment guideline and rubric document. You will find it helpful to have a copy of the assignment guideline and rubric available as we continue with an overview of the assignment expectations. To begin, we will talk about the purpose of the assignment, and we will discuss the expectations which are outlined in the assignment guideline and rubric document. Next, we will move into the specific details which are required for the week three assignment. Let’s begin our assignment webinar by talking about the purpose of the week three addressing bias paper. Slide 3:In today’s current healthcare settings, the increasing diversity, globalization and expanding technologies produce complex ethical pressures that influence nursing practice and practice outcomes. To be effective in a master’s prepared advanced nurse practice role it is important to understand personal values, beliefs, strengths, and limitations. The purpose of this assignment is to explore values and beliefs, and reflect upon implicit and explicit personal biases. In addition you will develop a plan to reduce bias and promote personal and professional growth. Slide 4:Here are a few “fast facts” to keep in mind as we begin our assignment overview:The Addressing Bias paper will include a one- to two- page written paper. The paper must include a minimum of two peer-reviewed scholarly sources, current within five years, to support the information presented. The assignment is worth 125 points, which is 12.5% of the total course grade, and the assignment is due on Sunday night, 11:59 pm MT, at the end of week threeSlide 5:This assignment addresses two of our course learning outcomes: learning outcome numbers one and two. Course learning outcome one: examine roles and competencies of master’s prepared nurses essential to performing as leaders and advocates of safe and quality care. Course learning outcome two: apply concepts of person-centered care to nursing practice situations. Slide 6:Now that we have discussed some of the fast facts about the assignment and the course learning outcomes which are addressed, we will focus our attention on the specific expectations of the Addressing Bias paper, let’s begin by looking at the steps you will take to complete the assignment:First, to begin this assignment, you will reflect on the impact of personal bias on outcomes in nursing practice. How does personal bias impact nursing care delivery? As you think about the ways through which bias might intentionally or unintentionally impact the delivery of care, consider any personal bias which you may have.Next, complete a self-inventory to identify your personal biases. There is a link to The Harvard University implicit bias self-inventory located in the week three lesson in Canvas. This exercise will offer you insights regarding explicit and implicit biases which you may hold. The self-inventory is something that you can do privately, and will not be submitted to the course. It is for your own personal awareness, and is intended to offer you insights as you develop this assignment. After reflecting upon your biases, identify one personal bias that you have. Develop one strategy to address this bias, and reflect upon new insights you gained from completing this assignment. Finally, develop a 1-2 page written paper to discuss your findings. As was noted earlier, be sure to download and print out a copy of the assignment guidelines and rubric to direct your steps as you prepare the assignment.Over the next few slides, we will review the content and format requirements for this assignment. Slide 7:Remember to refer to the assignment guideline and rubric for full details regarding the grading criteria. Let’s begin with the first section of the paper, which is the introduction. Within the introduction section of your paper, be sure to include:General statements on biases and discussion regarding how biases influence interactions and affect outcomes in health care delivery and nursing practice. Identify the sections of the paper, and be sure to include scholarly support from peer-reviewed publications that are current within the last 5 years. In this section of the paper, your literature support should be used to validate the impact of biases on interactions and outcomes in health care delivery and nursing practice. Slide 8:After the introduction, the next section of your paper will be the discussion of bias section. In this section of the paper, you will identify the selected specialty track, and you will discuss how biases can influence and affect outcomes in selected specialty area of professional practice. Be sure to provide citations from scholarly nursing literature that support your position. Let’s consider a couple of examples of how bias might impact outcomes within a selected MSN specialty track. If I am enrolled in the education track and plan on working as a nurse educator upon completion of this program, I may discuss the impact of nursing faculty bias on student learning outcomes. I would explain how bias might influence the learning outcomes, and I would be sure to include support from scholarly nursing literature to support my writing. Let’s consider another example for a student enrolled in the nurse executive track. Suppose a MSN student in the executive track plans on working as a nursing manager upon completion of the program. This student may be concerned about the fact that personal biases held by a manager or supervisor can influence staff retention, collaboration, and communication. In this situation, the student would explain how bias might influence these outcomes in the work setting, and provide support from scholarly nursing literature to support these assertions.Slide 9:Following the section of the paper where you present a discussion on bias, you will develop a section of the paper titled ‘Personal Bias”In this section of the paper you will identify one personal bias that you have. In addition, you will explain if the bias is implicit or explicit in nature. Implicit bias is a bias that is entirely unintentional – this would be a subconscious, involuntary, bias - one that you are not consciously aware of having. An explicit bias is one that is intentional in nature. An explicit bias is one that is voluntary and deliberate – a bias that is intentional and about which you are consciously aware. Let’s consider an example of an implicit bias where I am a teacher in face to face classroom who has an implicit bias against students who wear purple. I do not respond to their questions as much as others, and I often scrutinize their participation. If someone asked me if I did not like students who wear purple I would say “no” as my behaviors are not intentional. Now let’s consider an example of an explicit bias that the same teacher might have. If I am a teacher in face to face classroom with an explicit bias against students who wear sparkly shoes, I intentionally do not engage in discussion with those students during class. I might even scrutinize the performance of students wearing sparkly shoes. In the situation where this explicit bias is present, all students know if they take my class and wear sparkly shoes, their grades will be negatively impacted. Slide 10:After the Personal Bias section, you will include a section in the paper titled Strategy to Reduce Bias.In this section of the paper, you will develop one strategy to address or reduce your personal bias. Finally, a self-reflection section of the paper will provide a summary of key concepts addressed in your paper, and a self-reflection of new insights which you gained through completing this assignment. Remember, you will need a minimum of two peer-reviewed scholarly sources, current within five years, to validate your work within the paper. The written paper must be a minimum of one full page, and no more than two full pages in length. As you calculate your paper length, it is important to note that the title and reference pages do not count in the page length total. Finally, because this assignment is reflective in nature, it is acceptable to use first person in your writing. Slide 11:As you review the assignment guidelines and rubric, you will notice that immediately following the content criteria, there are APA format and writing mechanics criteria listed on the rubric. This slide provides you with an overview of the graduate-level writing style expectations. You will want to be sure that your writing is reflective of graduate-level work by using APA format for the structure of your paper – including title page, running head, body of the paper, level 1 headings, and the reference page. At the top of page 2, centered, you will place the title of paper using upper and lower case letters, and regular font. The introduction section of the paper will immediately follow the title on page 2, and will not include any level heading or subheading. After the introduction, your paper should include the following sections: Discussion of BiasPersonal BiasStrategy to reduce bias, andSelf-reflectionNote that these sections are identified with level on headings as per APA format- centered, bolded, with upper and lower case letters.
