What does the word ‘Celebration’ mean to you? Q. What are some celebrations you have participated in?Students draw on personal experiences to explore and share a chosen celebration Teacher prompts students with questions such as:Q. What is the Celebration?Q. When is it Celebrated? Q. Why is it Celebrated?Q. How is it Celebrated? Q. Who do we Celebrate with? Q. What do we eat/drink/do? 10mins15mins5minsIntroduction To begin the lesson, teacher plays a short youtube clip called ‘It’s my Birthday’ by Helen Oxenbury. After displaying this clip, teacher introduces students to the term ‘Celebration’. Students then take turns providing responses to add to the class brainstorm, which is recorded as a wordle on the smartboard. Teacher asks students to consider the different types of celebrations DevelopmentPrevious to this lesson, students were asked to bring in a photograph of them participating in their favourite celebration. Students will use this photograph as a seed for thinking, as they will create a mind map to present their chosen celebration. Teacher gives students an A3 piece of paper, where they stick their photograph in the middle. If the photograph is portrait, so too will the mind map. Students then draw lines coming from the photograph, where they write as much as they can about their celebration. If students have forgotten their photograph, they must choose a celebration and draw a picture in place of the photo. Conclusion Once all students have completed their mind maps, teacher selects individual students to share their creations with the class. Teacher might like to collect these mind maps and create a display on the classroom wall. Discussing with students during brainstorm, Questioning Observing students working Discussing students work with them as they participate in activity Observing and marking students completed work LESSON 2Students are introduced to the term ‘Symbol’ and draw on prior knowledge through discussion with their peers. Q. What are some symbols you have seen in every day life? Q. What do these symbols represent? Students explore symbols through their chosen celebrations Q. What are some symbols that may link to your celebration? Q. What do they look like? Q. What do they represent? Q. What colours are used? Q. What shapes are used? Q. Where might we see this symbol? 10mins15mins5minsIntroduction The lesson begins by discussing with students what was learnt in the previous lesson regarding their chosen celebrations. Teacher then introduces the term ‘symbol’, and gives students one minute to think of as many symbols as they can. Once the minute is up, students turn to the person next to them and discuss, before sharing with the rest of the class (THINK PAIR SHARE). Development Teacher asks students to think about whether their chosen celebration from the previous lesson may incorporate any kind of symbols. Eg Birthday celebration – cake. Students raise their hands and share their ideas, discussing the reasoning behind such symbols. In this activity, students will be deciding on a symbol that represents an aspect of their celebration (chosen in previous lesson). Students will then use pencils, pastels and crayons to create an artwork of this symbol on art paper.Students are given their art paper and drawing materials, teacher roams the room assisting individual students and discussing with them why they have chosen their symbol. ConclusionTo conclude the lesson, teacher will call upon individual students to share their symbols. Students must explain their colour choice, and how the symbol represents an aspect of the chosen celebration. Teacher might like to laminate these artworks and display on the classroom wall Observing students when discussing Questioning Questioning Discussing Observing students working Discussing students work with them as they participate in activity Observing and marking students completed workDiscussing completed work with students LESSON 3Students explore the idea of gathering to share a meal. Q. Think back to yesterdays lesson, did anybody choose a celebration that involved sharing a meal? Q. How you ever gathered with your family or community to share a meal? Q. Where did you gather? Why? What did you eat? Students respond to the bible passage Luke 22:7-20 ‘The Last Supper’ - I wonder what it would have been like to share this meal with Jesus - I wonder what Jesus meant by the words “This is my Body which will be given for you” - I wonder how Jesus felt as he shared this last meal with his disciples - I wonder if the disciples understood what Jesus was doing 5mins20mins5minsIntroduction This lesson begins with a short discussion with students about what has been discovered through the previous two celebration lessons, regarding their chosen celebrations. Teacher then questions students if their celebration involved eating a meal with their family or community. This leads to a discussion about gathering to share a meal. Teacher explains to students that this lesson will explore a bible passage that examines the idea of sharing a meal with other people. DevelopmentTeacher reads the bible passage Luke 22:7-20 ‘The Last Supper’. Teacher then wonders with students: I wonder what it would have been like to share this meal with Jesus I wonder what Jesus meant by the works “This is my body which will be given for you” I wonder how Jesus felt as he shared his last meal with his disciples I wonder if the disciples understood what Jesus was doing Students watch an animated retell of ‘the last supper’, which can be found on the ‘together at one altar’ website. Students are then asked to write a short diary entry in their Religion books of the last supper from the perspective of a disciple. Conclusion To conclude the lesson, teacher will call upon individual students to stand up and read their diary entries to the rest of the class. Teacher might like to plan another lesson where diary entries are published and displayed on the classroom wall. Questioning and discussing with students Teacher listens to the responses offered by students during the ‘I wonder’ questions. Teacher roams the room observing students participating in the activity Teacher listens to the completed diary entries presented by students Observing and marking students completed work LESSON 4Students are introduced to the ‘liturgy of the Eucharist’ story. - I wonder why we praise and thank God for Jesus - I wonder how you feel when the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ - I wonder what you could say to Jesus after receiving Him in Holy Communion Students express themselves through creating their own prayer of ‘thanks’10mins15mins5minsIntroduction The lesson begins by telling the story ‘Liturgy of the Eucharist’. I wonder why we praise and thank God for Jesus I wonder how you feel when the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ I wonder what you could say to Jesus after receiving Him in Holy Communion Development Teacher discusses with students the meaning of the word ‘Eucharist’ as thanksgiving. Teacher then explains that students will be creating their own ‘thank you’ prayer to God for giving us Jesus. Teacher models to students on butcher’s paper to ensure understanding. Students return to their tables and individually create their own prayer of thanks. Teacher roams the room assisting individual students. ConclusionOnce students have completed their prayers, teacher instructs them to sit on the floor in a circle again. One at a time, students take turns reading their prayers aloud to the rest of the class. Some students may not wish to share their prayers, this is ok, the students will need to say ‘pass’ when it is their turn. Teacher listens to the responses offered by students during the ‘I wonder’ questions Teacher observes students working during the activityTeacher listens to the prayers created and shared by students with the rest of the classObserving and marking students completed workLESSON 5Students are introduced to the story ‘Lets Eat’ by Ana Zamorano Q. Who can tell me important events that occurred in the story? Q. In what ways is this story similar to the Eucharist? Students explore the relationship between ‘Let’s Eat’ and the Eucharist Q. I wonder how this story is similar to the Eucharist 5mins15mins5minsIntroduction Teacher introduces the picture book ‘Let’s Eat’ by Ana Zamorano and begins reading aloud to students. Once the story is over, Teacher discusses with students the events of the books, and how it may be similar to the Eucharist. Development Teacher explains to students that they will be completing a Venn Diagram to compare the picture book with the Eucharist. To assist the students, Teacher reads the picture book one more time. The first few responses are done as a class, before students are given their Venn Diagrams and instructed to individually complete comparing how the Eucharist is similar to ‘Lets Eat’.Teacher walks around the room observing and assisting students with their work Conclusion Once students have completed the activity, they are given the opportunity to share their ideas with the class to add to the class Venn Diagram which will be displayed on the smartboard. Teacher then discusses with students what they learnt this lesson, before instructing then to pack away their books. Teacher listens to students recall events in the story Teacher observes students working during the activityTeacher listens to the answers shared by students with the rest of the classObserving and marking students completed workReflection and Evaluation Did the students achieve the learning outcomes each lesson? How do I know this? What were the successful components of each lesson? Why were they successful? What motivated and engaged the studentsHow did the chosen resources support students?
