Dana Di GiansanteGrade 3 – Reader’s Workshop Main IdeaOverview: Students will accurately identify the main idea and supporting details from an expository text.Learning Arrangement: Whole group instruction, partnership workCCSS Addressed: HYPERLINK "" CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.2: Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main SS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.3.2: Determine the main ideas and supporting details of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and SS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.3.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on?grade 3 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.Performance Indicators:As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:Accurately identify the main idea of an expository text.Accurately identify supporting details to support the main idea.Contribute within their partnerships when asked to partner read and identify the main idea and supporting details.Objectives:Students will follow verbal and written directions in order to contribute to the whole group and partnership work of identifying the main idea and supporting details.Students will accurately fill out their main idea graphic organizer within their partnerships.Students will accurately identify the main idea and supporting details of their expository text.Student Materials:Pencils, reading foldersTeacher Materials:National Geographic Kids Readers on multiple levels, main idea graphic organizer, main idea anchor chart, document camera & SMARTboardProcedure:Introductory Activities - Whole Group Mini Lesson:The teacher will begin by reviewing what the main idea and supporting details are with the class, referring to the main idea anchor chart & calling on students to respond.The teacher will give the teaching point: today we will be practicing finding the main idea and supporting details from a nonfiction book.The teacher will review strategies to figure out the main idea of a text.The teacher will distribute the main idea graphic organizer and a handout of the chapter “On the Menu” from Sea Turtles to the class.Before reading aloud, the teacher will have the class observe the cover page and table of contents to have students make a prediction about what this text may be about. The teacher will review that we can find the main idea of a whole book, or we can find the main idea of just a chunk of the book. Today we will be finding the main idea of just a chunk of the book, or one chapter.The teacher will read the chapter aloud, asking students to think about what the main idea of this section could be.After reading the two pages, the teacher will ask the students to turn and talk in order to try to identify what the main idea is from this section of the book. After turning & talking, the teacher will call on a student to share what they found the main idea to be.The teacher will then write the main idea into the graphic organizer, instructing the students to follow.The teacher will repeat this for three supporting details, asking students to turn and talk before sharing and filling it into their graphic organizers.The teacher will check for comprehension of the lesson before giving the next direction: to work within partnerships. Developmental Activities – Partnership Work:Students will work within their reading partnerships to partner-read an expository text at their level and identify the main idea and supporting details of at least one chapter of their text.Students will partner read to one another each chapter. After each chapter, they will stop and turn and talk about what the main idea could be and what supporting details they have found to support their main ideaStudents will then each fill out their main idea graphic organizer with the main idea and supporting details that they found.Concluding Activities – Share:After students work with their partner and identify main ideas and supporting details of their nonfiction text, we will meet on the rug sitting next to our partners.Partnerships will turn and share to another partnership the main idea they found from their text and the supporting details they have found.The teacher will then call on 2-3 partnerships to share what their text was and the main ideas/details they have found from one chapter.Follow up Activities (time permitting)Time permitting, students will find their reading spot and quietly read-to-self a nonfiction book of their choice, ultimately using a think-mark to write down the main idea of the topic they were reading about and filling in their reading log.Assessment:The teacher will assess:Students’ attention to and participation in the lesson discussion, while the whole group discussion is happening, and their ability to work within a partnership.Students’ ability to accurately identify the main idea of a textStudents’ ability to accurately identify the supporting details to the main idea.Differentiated Instruction:Students will receive multiple levels of National Geographic Kids books according to their reading level.Students will be partnered with another student slightly higher/lower than their reading level.Directions will be reread as needed.Students may need to be asked to work independently in the event they cannot stay on task.Guidance will be provided as needed by the teacher. ................
