In July of 1905, while still serving in the United States Senate, Mitchell was convicted and sentenced to six months in jail, a $1,000 fine, and complete disbarment from public office. In December of that same year, while his appeal was pending, Mitchell died, apparently from complications following a tooth extraction. ................
