Start with google images to make a quick impact then look for details.Find and record facts on paper giving web sites used (encouraging them to reference their facts)Lesson2 Start of Expressive unitPupils share a fact each until they don’t have any new ones.Perhaps add some facts of your own and perhaps mention UK is considering a deposit system for plastic bottles as we used to for glass bottles.Discuss why so many plastic bottles are not recycled, both here and in third world countries.Show Boyer Slat’s (18 year old) TedTalk film about his view on sea pollution and his solution.Ask them to note down the fact that impacted on them emotionally. Which mammal/sea creature was involvedThis will be the basis of their painted expressive work.Lesson 3 to 6Issue a sheet of A3 paper for planning and experimenting Ipads will help here for images.Trying out ideas for their painting. Drawing images of their mammal/sea creature.Drawing background ideas and how plastic rubbish will feature in the painting.Lesson 7 to 10Creating their final expressive piece. Using a variety of techniques and mediums used in S1 and early S2. Block paints, using tracing paper and/or light box (water colours or tempera for some as a new technique) printing, drawing, shading, enlarging, Berol pens. Use test papers to try out new techniques before trying on final piece.Lesson 11Self and peer assessment.Success CriteriaTheir chosen mammal/sea creature should be instantly recognizable.Plastic rubbish and its effect on the mammal/sea creature should be clear. It should be clear that the environment is underwater. All techniques should have been used successfully and why they were used explainedMore than one process should have been used in the creation of the image. They have used proper Art terms in self and peer assessmentStart of Design UnitExperiences and Outcomes for the design unit are: EXA 3-02a, EXA 3-03a, EXA 3-06a and EXA 3-07aBenchmarks used for success criteria and evaluation for the design unit are: Researches, develops and communicates a solution to a design brief by working through a process. Evaluates what works well and what could be improved or different in their own and others’ work, using appropriate art and design vocabulary. When creating images and objects to express ideas, thoughts and feelings: shows understanding of media properties and the effect of techniques and technology used; shows understanding of how visual elements and visual concepts can be combined, for example, to create mood and atmosphere; selects and applies media and techniques, giving reasons for their choices.Global Learning elements: Waste reduction and recycling, ethical issues and concern for nature.Resources required for Design UnitIpadsPlastic bottles.Craft hot air gun and/or hairdryer to heat and curl plastic.Soldering iron to make white edged holes in plastic.Scissors and or/Craft Knife to cut plastic.Images of lighting made from recycled plastic.Glue Gun to attach plastic together. Some examples of plastic bottles which have had processes applied.A3 sheets of paper for recording possible design solutions and decisionsLesson1Ipads for researchIntroduce idea of making something beautiful from rubbish.Show them some images of lighting made with recycled bottles.Find some more recycled plastic bottle images in pairs on the ipads.Issue Design Brief and Success Criteria and A3 sheet.Split sheet into 6 parts for design ideas.Homework: Think about the sea theme of the lighting and bring in plastic bottles.Lesson 2, 3,4 and 5Examples of plastic bottles with processes applied.Demonstrate safe use of the equipment. They can work alone or in pairs.Ipads in some lesson to research lighting designRemind of design brief and success criteria and encourage them to refer to it throughout. They should start by drawing ideas and later try experimenting with the plastic and developing further ideas.Lesson 6,7,8,9, They should chose a design and explain why they chose that one.Explain what processes they will apply to the plastic.Demonstrate safe use of the equipment again.Create the design, rechecking the design brief and success criteria.Lesson 10Create a lit display of the final lighting solutions. You might want to invite others in the school to see them.Evaluation through peer and self-assessment.Design BriefCreate a lighting design to use with LED lights. You must use recycled plastic bottles for all or most of the design. The light must cast an interesting shadow when lit.It should give the room a calm peaceful atmosphere.Use the sea as a theme to help inspire you.Success criteriaI have met all aspects of the design brief.I have explored several design solutions by drawing and experimenting. My design shows I understand the media properties and the effect of techniques and technology used.I selected and applied media and techniques, giving reasons for my choices.I can evaluate what worked well and what could be improved or different in their own and others’ work, using appropriate art and design vocabulary. I just did my own thing. My design meets some of the design criteria. My design meets most of the design criteria. My design meets all of the design criteria and I kept checking it during my work.TechniquesI tried one or two techniques. My finished design didn’t look like I thought it would.I used one or two techniques in my finished lighting design. It looks a bit like my original design.I used at least 3 techniques in my finished lighting. It looks look exactly. It looks very like my original design.I used at least 3 techniques and my finished lighting looks exactly as I planned.Self-evaluationWhat went wellWhat could be improvedPeerevaluationWhat went wellWhat could be improvedPlastic Expressive Unit EVALUATION S2Name:Date: 4Is not yet performing at the expected standard for my stage. 3Is sometimes performing at the expected standard for my stage2Is consistently performing at the expected standard for my stage.1is consistently performing beyond the expected standard for my stageMy opinionTeacher’s opinionMammal/Sea CreatureI could not draw my chosen mammal/sea creature.I used tracing paper and/or light box to create my mammal/sea creature.I drew my mammal/sea creature myself and it is recognizable but I could have painted it better.I drew and painted my mammal/sea creature myself and it is instantly recognizablePlastic Rubbish I could not draw the plastic rubbish.I needed help to draw the plastic rubbish.I drew and painted my rubbish but it is not obvious how it affects my chosen creature.I found it easy to draw and paint the rubbish and you can see how it affected my chosen sea creature.UnderwaterI do not know how to make it look like it is underwater.I just painted it blue to look like it was underwater.I painted it blue and put in some seaweed and rocks and fish etc to show it was underwater. It is obvious it is underwater because I showed where the water and sky separate. I also put in a sandy bottom, rocks, seaweed and fish etc to show it was underwater.Self-evaluationWhat went wellWhat could be improvedPeerevaluationWhat went wellWhat could be improved ................
