WEEK 1

Intro to Modern Day Slavery (facts vs. myth, slavery in 21st century, sweatshop facts, poetry, soccer ball activity)

Introduce the Project - Hand out packet and discuss the following:

1. Driving question – What can we do to bring awareness to modern day slavery?

2. Requirements and components of project

3. Choose groups (can work by yourself or with one other person)

4. Begin brainstorming on topic and project ideas – look at topic list and choose topic and origin of focus

WEEK 2 - Research

• Confirm partners/review project. Begin researching and taking notes on your research. This research will be used to help you write your slave narratives as well as get you to start thinking about your project idea.

WEEK 3: Slave narratives should be written at home and worked on each night for homework. Each person in the group will need to write their own slave narrative, however, there will only be one project per group and this will mostly be worked on in class. Slave narrative rough drafts will be due on:

WEEK 4: You and your class members should be ready to turn in final draft slave narratives and present your projects on: _____________________________

SLAVE NARRATIVES: (100 POINTS!)

You will each be required to write a slave narrative on your chosen topic around Modern Day Slavery. You can write from any of the 4 different perspectives…

- the slave’s perspective

- the exploiter’s/master’s perspective

- the parent’s perspective

- the government or onlooker’s perspective (sibling, govt official etc.)

Slave Narrative Requirements:

Ideas: You will need to have 6 or more events or parts to your slave narrative story. You will need to go in depth and detail about what it is like to be the slave, the exploiter, a family member, or onlooker/observer. Your information will need to be accurate and well researched.

Organization: Your organization of events or pieces should make sense and have a flow that makes the story easy to understand and follow. Your slave narrative should have a clear beginning and a clear ending.

Voice: The voice in your slave narrative will need to be very descriptive and will need to capture the time and experience authentically. Your story will need to have dialogue and you will be writing in first person.

Writing Conventions: Your slave narrative should be free of spelling, grammar and punctuation errors.

Specifics of Slave Narrative Stories:

1) All papers must be 3-5 pages typed and double spaced

2) It must be written in Times New Roman 12 point font

3) You will need to include 3-5 images that enhance the story (these can be drawn or printed out from the internet, but they must go with what you are writing about).

4) You will need to include a title page and number the pages throughout your slave narrative.

5) You must also include a works cited page at the end of your slave narrative for all the research you gathered in order to write it: you must use proper MLA citation. (See attached sheet for MLA formatting.)

PROJECT (100 points) and PRESENTATION: (50 points)

You will be required to present your project to the whole class. It will include the following components:

- Presentation must be 3-5 minutes in length.

- You and your partner must equally contribute to the presentation. (i.e. You both must help present some aspect of your project).

- Your completed/polished final project should describe/show/ awareness about a specific topic and origin concerning modern day slavery.

- Check in with teacher the day before presentation to make sure all necessary tech is available for you to use.

SOME PROJECT CHOICES MAY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO…

- Prezi presentation with photos and facts, graphs, maps etc.

- Brochure/pamphlet. This might also need to accompany another part of the project. (This pamphlet/brochure will need to be passed out to educate others during your presentation so multiple copies will need to be made)

- Create a website, with links to blog, Instagram etc. that helps create awareness around your topic.

- Create an online scrapbook video (Voicethread)

- Tri-fold board presentation (includes pictures and information etc.)

- Create a live news broadcast video (interviewer, master, slave, slave family, government.)
