Introduction

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA?) is the form used by the U.S.

Department of Education to collect information and determine an applicant¡¯s Expected Family

Contribution (EFC) by conducting a ¡°need analysis¡± based on his or her information. The EFC

is used to determine an applicant¡¯s eligibility for federal grants and loans. Other agencies, such

as states and schools, may use this information to award other types of aid.

The ¡°FAFSA MyStudentData Download¡± file enables an applicant to download his or her

FAFSA information (but not his or her spouse¡¯s or parents¡¯) in a machine-readable format to a

computer. The applicant can use the information to make informed decisions about finances, use

of assets, etc.

This document provides the record layout for the two-lined, comma-delimited ASCII version of

the ¡°FAFSA MyStudentData Download¡± file. The first line of the file contains a header row

with the field names enclosed in quotes. The second line of the file includes the field values,

enclosed in quotes, that correspond with the header row. This document includes the field names

and valid values in English and Spanish for all fields included in this file.

The ¡°FAFSA MyStudentData Download¡± file includes space for up to 20 three-digit comment

codes that are included on the applicant¡¯s SAR/ISIR. In early September you can download the

comment text from the ISIR Comment Text file located at the FSAdownload Web site:

fsadownload.CPSTestSys1718.htm.

The English and Spanish valid content is separated in the record layouts by a forward slash

(/).

Spanish characters are written to the file using character set ISO-8859-1. In most cases, how

you see a Spanish character presented is how it is written to the file; for example, ¡°Pe?a¡± is

written to the file with the tilde over the ¡°n.¡±

If you open the file in an editor or another application that reads the file, be sure the program

reads the ISO-8859-1 characters appropriately.

The ¡°Changes¡± column describes revisions made to the record layout. We do not call out the

question number changes; however, we do describe other field label changes and valid content

changes.
