Mrs. Desai’s English I ClassPayal.Desai@“No matter what anybody tells you, WORDS and IDEAS can change the world”- Dead Poets SocietyWelcome to J.J. Pearce High School and English I! I expect great things out of all my students and look forward to working with each of you this year. CurriculumWe will study multi-genre forms of literature and incorporate various forms of writing into our studies. Most works are in the textbook, but in addition to our textbook, we will read and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury during the last six weeks. We will also study vocabulary and grammar to help in effective writing and communication throughout the year. Additionally, we will work on various aspects of fictional, narrative, and informational writing as well as research throughout the year. Makeup WorkThe general guidelines for makeup work as stated in the Student Handbook will be followed. If the student is absent, he/she will have one day for each day absent to make up any work. It is the student’s responsibility to make up the work and turn it in without reminders from me. If the student is absent the day before a test, he/she is responsible for taking that test if the date for it was announced prior to the absence. If new material was presented on the day of the absence, the student may make up the test at a scheduled time. Students are responsible for making up quizzes and tests within one week of their absence.Late WorkHomework is an expectation for all students and all assigned work MUST be done. ?Late work will not be tolerated. ?Assignments turned in after the due date will be subject to a grade penalty. The late penalty according to the Instructional Operating Guide for RISD states 1 day late=70% credit, 2 days late=50% credit, 3 days late=0 credit.Weebly and RPortalMake sure to check HYPERLINK ""mrsdesai. to stay updated on current and upcoming assignments. With your Rportal log in you are able to keep track of your grades in every class as well – utilize that!Academic IntegrityCheating and/or plagiarism are unacceptable and will result in the assignment receiving no credit. An honor code will be discussed and signed by each student and parent so that an understanding of what it constitutes and the possible repercussions is achieved.PortfoliosThe district views portfolios as a means to assess writing. All of your written work for this class will be kept in a folder that will remain in the classroom. As we progress through the year, certain pieces will be designated for placement in the portfolio by the teacher. The student may also have a choice as to specific pieces he or she might want to place in the folder as well. It will move with you as you progress through high school.Grading SystemAll assignments will be graded on a 100-point scale. However, grades for all assignments will be weighted based upon importance. I will inform the class of the weight of an assignment when it is given. The structure of the grading system will be as follows: Major grades: 50% and Class work/Daily work: 50%.Class ExpectationsBe on time. Pearce implements a tardy system, so make sure you make the best use of your passing period. If another teacher, principal, or secretary detains you, you must get a pass to be admitted to class. Bring all necessary books and supplies to class each day. Responsibility for these items rests upon you. An organized student is a successful student! A lost textbook for English I must be paid for before another textbook can be issued.Restroom breaks should be taken during the 5 minute passing period. If it is necessary during the class period, it will not be allowed the first or last 10 minutes of class or while instruction is taking place in the classroom. Food and drink are NOT allowed in the classroom, except under special circumstances as designated by the teacher. Enter the room quietly each day, gather materials, and be in your seat when the tardy bell rings. No student will be admitted to the classroom without his/her name badge.Immediately begin working on your bell ringer activity if one is presented.Show respect for each other. Homework is an expectation. Students are responsible for keeping up with their assignments and turning them in on time.KEEP ALL GRADED WORK. You will need it for your exams at the end of both semesters and it gives you an idea of where you stand academically throughout the year. Cell phones will not be allowed in this classroom. I do not allow students to use or charge phones in my room. Failure to comply will result in your phone being turned into the office and you will have to pay $15.00 to get it back. The teacher dismisses class, not the bell. Remain in your seat until you are wished a good day.All rules, regulations, and procedures of J. J. Pearce High School will be enforced in this classroom.TutoringMonday and Tuesday afternoon - 4:15 until 5:00pm (by appointment) & Wednesday from 8:15-8:55 am.
