TERRITORIAL MEN'S EMPHASIS IDEA - COI%11[ITNTTY INVOLVEMENT

The corps officer had identified a senior citizen couple in the corps who were in need of someone to paint their living room. They lived in an older home and it had been some time since it had been painted. Since the living room was relatively small, it was figured that this would be an easy investment of time for the men and not a great financial investment of the corps.

Major visited the family and asked if they were willing to have the men paint their room. They were excited for this to happen, especially since the husband was fresh out of the hospital and the wife unable to physically do the job herself. It should be stated that we especially chose this couple because they were members of our corps family. Often we do so much for others, that our own church family can sometimes get overlooked.

The day chosen, Major met with the men and we planned out how this would happen and what supplies would be needed. The only real cost to the corps was for the paint. Since the balance of supplies needed were easily obtainable, most of the men offered to bring the brushes, rollers from home and we were able to secure drop clothes from the thrift store.

The Saturday of the event we met at the lodge dining room for coffee, doughnuts and prayer at 8:00 a.m. Major offered us a devotional and we were on our way. We followed the lead car to the home and the couple was there waiting for us. They had arranged to run errands that entire morning so they wouldn't be under feet. By 9:00, we were up and running.

The men spent the first half hour taking things inside the living room outside. Special care was given not to kriick doors or walls. Nails and screws were removed and when pieces of plaster were missing we caulked and patched them. We wiped down the walls, windows and doorframes to removed the excess dirt and dust. Since it had been a number of years since the last painting, there was a great deal of dust that had to be wiped away before we could begin.

It took us about an hour for all of us to paint the room. After we put a fan in the room to help with drying, we then applied a second coat. When we felt sufficiently comfortable with the dryness of the paint we began to carefully move things back in to the home and re-hang the drapes and blinds. As we were preparing to leave the owners of the home arrived and were very grateful for the job we had done. Before leaving, we met in a circle with the couple and prayed for them and all who entered the home. We had packed up and left by 12:00 noon.

TERRITORIAL MEN'S EMPHASIS (Continued)

Goal: Visit the home of a senior member or divorced/widowed member of your corps and

spend three hours doing chores around their home the head of household would not normally be able to do.

Manpower needed: Depends on the size of the club, the members available to show up that day and time and

the projects needing to be done. If more men are available, consider visiting two or three homes simultaneously.

Time commitment: Three hours on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.

Supplies needed: Each man brings the tools needed for their specific responsibilities, first aid kit, camera.

How it works: 1) Corps officer identifies senior/woman in need of visiting and sets a date for a visit. 2) CO. and men's club volunteer visits the family in need at which time the family provides a list of chores needing done and the family member, C.O. and volunteer walk through the home and yard and make visual inspections. While inspecting, men make notes of work needed to be done along with tools and materials required. 3) C.O. and volunteer report back to men's club with jobs and tools required. A budget is built for materials and whatever cannot be donated, is purchased. The date is confirmed. 4) The Saturday of the work day, men meet the C.O. at the corps for a prayer breakfast at 8:00 a.m. Eat, pray and go over final assignments. 5) Men report to the home to do their chores. Important: Everyone arrives at one time and everyone leaves at one time. No man is to be alone with a female head of household without the others present. When a man finishes his chore he starts on the next or helps another group finish theirs. 6) Before leaving the home, the men gather around with the family and pray a blessing over the home. Men then meet at McDonalds to talk about their experience and debrief

"Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." Galatians 6:10
