Letter and Sound of the Week: Dd – Dudley Duck

Theme of the Week: Penguins

And The Great Kindness Challenge

Words of the Week: big, little

Dear Kindergarten Families:

Monteith is kicking off The Great Kindness Challenge today. Review the information that has come home regarding the fun things we are doing each day, and the 50 Acts of Kindness checklist we can help the students accomplish.

Language Arts: We are beginning a unit on penguins this week and learn how to find information in non-fiction books. This week we practice beginning /d/ sounds and the words big, little.

Review the letters: S, M, R, T, B, N, H, V, A, C, P, G, F, L, K, I, Q, D

Sight Words: I, see, am, a, the, by, my, like, to, can, go, an, and, we, look, no, not, love, at, here, on, this, is, it, you, are, for, have, said, will, do, big, little

Making Meaning book: Brave Bear - “Juicy” vocabulary words: doubtful, confident, courageous, persistent

Writing – We will continue practicing sounding out words and writing our sight words as we make a pattern book about penguins.

Math: We continue learning the numbers 11 through 20. Penny counting begins this week using 100 charts to count and look at the numbers while counting. Grouping in tens are helpful in adding on to tens to understand our base ten counting system. Try substituting a dime for 10 pennies to show “10 and more.” Some children are still struggling in identifying numbers 11 through 20. Using flashcards at home and timing how fast they can run through them might be a helpful practice. They think it’s fun!

Science: This week your young scientists watch as water defies gravity and travels up!

Coin Collection – Continue sending coins to reinforce counting, adding, and kindness as we hope to collect $50 to adopt an endangered penguin at the Detroit Zoo - now through February 13. I need penny wrappers, too, please.
