Ernest Hemingway Born 1899 in ChicagoGraduated from high school in 1917 (when US entered WW1) & was rejected by the army because of boxing injury to his eye. He joined the war effort the next year as an ambulance driver in Italy – was seriously wounded almost immediately (knee)1921, married, commissioned by The Toronto Star as a roving reporter, a post-war foreign correspondent. He went to Paris during the era of American expatriates; he met F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, and Gertrude Stein.
