Constitution Day Law

From the US Code, Title 36, Subtitle 1, Part A, Chapter 1, § 106

Designation. — September 17 is designated as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.

Purpose. — Constitution Day and Citizenship Day commemorate the formation and signing on September 17, 1787, of the Constitution and recognize all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens.

Proclamation. — The President may issue each year a proclamation calling on United States Government officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on Constitution Day and Citizenship Day and inviting the people of the United States to observe Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies.

State and Local Observances. — The civil and educational authorities of States, counties, cities, and towns are urged to make plans for the proper observance of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day and for the complete instruction of citizens in their responsibilities and opportunities as citizens of the United States and of the State and locality in which they reside.

The National Constitution Center in historic Philadelphia is America's most interactive history museum. Located just two blocks from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, it is the only museum devoted to the U.S. Constitution and the story of we, the people.



National Endowment of the Humanities

Constitutional Rights Foundation

2005 act of Congress states that all educational institutions receiving federal funding must observe September 17 as Constitution Day, which celebrates the 1787 signing of our founding document. According to the Department of Education guidelines, educators are free to design Constitution Day programming that best addresses the needs of their students.

The Bill of Rights Institute

Established in September 1999, the Bill of Rights Institute is classified by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) organization, a public charity. The Institute develops instructional material and educational programs on America's Founding documents and principles for high school American History and Civics teachers and students.
