Help Wanted!

Welcome to the Cell Chronicle daily newspaper. As a new hire you’re normally required to do grunt work (i.e. all the boring stuff nobody else wants to do; cleaning, dusting, shellacking the boss’ beetle collection, and typing up ads and articles that other people write). Well today you’re in luck! The whole ad department came down with gingivitis-complicated beaver fever when they all went on a fabulous hike in the mountains and chose to drink from the streams without boiling their water first (ooh…bacterial infections) and are home spending the day in worship of the porcelain god. There are two reasons for you to rejoice: 1) You definitely don’t regret missing the hike for the Scooby-doo marathon on Cartoon Network, and 2) You finally get a chance to prove yourself as a staff writer to replace the ad department. If you can successfully pull this off, not only will you be removed from “grunt” status, but you will also get a raise and a permanent position in the department.

Being that you are “boss for a day”, you get to pick and choose from the advertising assignments available and write what you would like. Upon opening the folder of purchased ads you see a list of the following possibilities:

▪ Develop an “FBI Wanted” poster for a cell organelle. Be sure to include details about the organelle’s job, what type of cell it’s found in, where in the cell it’s found and what it looks like. (Be sure to include a drawing of the organelle as well)

▪ Write a birth announcement for a new organelle. Be sure to include details about what the o\baby organelle’s job will be when it grows up, what type of cell the parents are, where is it’s nursery (where in the cell can it be found) and what it looks like. (Be sure to include a drawing of the organelle as well)

▪ Write an editorial from the perspective of a cell organelle admirer or from the cell organelle to an admirer. Be sure to include details about the organelle’s job, what type of cell it’s found in, where in the cell it’s found and what it looks like. (Be sure to include a drawing of the organelle as well as either an autograph or a fan snapshot)

After developing your ad, you must prepare it for layout on a sheet of computer paper. When you prepare the layout, you can include graphics and a “photograph” (you must include at least 1 photograph OR set of graphics). There is no length requirement, but think about how long ads generally are and what information you need to get across. Your grade will be based on accuracy as well as thoroughness (Did you answer the proposed questions or skip any? Did you do the bare minimum or did you think about other items that would be appropriate for this ad? Are you missing the graphics or photograph?). This assignment will be worth 30 points; 20 points for accuracy/thoroughness, and 10 points for graphics and layout (spelling, neatness etc).
