The South African Sandplay Society (SASS) presents:Seminars in Advanced Jungian SandplayMasculine and FemininePresented by Marita de Wet - Saturday, 16 November 2019 Location: Paarl Practice. 421 Main Street, Paarl , Western Cape About the workshop In Carl Jung’s view of the human psyche, the ideas of opposites and wholeness hold a central position. In fact, Jung considers the tension between the opposites a necessity to create psychic energy (libido). Through the process of maturing (individuation) we learn to own the opposites and hold the tension between them. The Self functions as a union of opposites and thus constitutes our most immediate experience of the Divine (of wholeness). The mandala is one of the best-known images representing wholeness/Self. Today, we live in a one-sided, masculine-oriented, materialistic society, where the feminine is denigrated. Witnessing the raging and frightening war between the opposites of masculine and feminine is traumatizing and deeply damaging. The victims are women (and children), countless, silent and invisible; the perpetrators are men, powerful and untouchable. This cultural split between masculine and feminine reflects an inner split in the human psyche, for both men and women. Or, is culture the cause the inner split? The idealization of masculine qualities and devaluing of feminine qualities means that one part of me (masculine) is valued, respected, and consciously developed, while the other part of me (feminine) has no value, it is weak, remains undeveloped, and is relegated to the unconscious. As Ben Okri asks: Where is the world first made, within or without? Where must the healing begin?Do we make the world we see? Do we project onto the world the despair that we feel, … the terror that we sense, …?There is no despair or terror … in the sky, the flowers, the bees, the horses, the cats, the wind, the sea, or the mountains. So the cosmic illness, …. The despair, the terror, the hopelessness, the emptiness, are all within. We are the sickness … We stop seeing … the messages sent to us to wake us up and remind us of who we are, to guide us to the moment of initiation into our true kingdom. We become the condition we harbor, that we project, that we blame on the world. Where must the healing begin? Maybe the healing must begin within(From In Arcadia, pp 220 – 225, quoted with liberty.)If the healing must start within, what are we (therapists) to do? We dedicate our lives to promoting healing and wholeness. What then, is our task? How do we start the process of healing the split in the human psyche? How do we stitch together the fragile fibers of the torn-apart human heart? How can the healer heal him/herself? How can we see this inner split with greater clarity and deeper compassion to be better guides towards wholeness?Carl Jung advises: “Your vision will become clear only when you look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” He warned, prophetically, that “the world hangs on a thin thread, and that is the psyche of man.” He continues that the great dangers today are all man’s doing, we are the great danger... It had been demonstrated how powerful the psyche is, how important knowledge of it is. “But we know nothing about it!” No one would give any credit to the idea that the psychic processes of the ordinary man have any importance whatsoever. “That is the great mistake.” In search of a better understanding of the human psyche, we’ll explore in this seminar series the complexities of the masculine/feminine dyad. We’ll assess inner damage to the psyche; the positive and negative aspects of masculine and feminine; the life-giving play between the masculine and feminine energies. We’ll explore the inter-dependency between the masculine and feminine energies and how one is severely hampered without the other. These two opposites seek each other for the mysterious conjunction, for wholeness, for the birth of the third, the new. More about the seminarsSeminar 1 – Entering the minefield of confusing terminology in search of clarity. The terms masculine and feminine are used in different senses that is confusing:Biological, referring to the sex assigned at birth (historically binary, we now added an intersex category Culturally defined gender roles (historically binary, now increasingly fluid) Jung uses the terms to refer to the Archetypal patterns of masculine (Great Father) and feminine (Great Mother)Lastly, Jung uses the terms for the contra-sexual images (anima/animus) of the “other” In his alchemical writings, Jung seems to use the terms masculine, Logos, Sun, Spirit interchangeably, while also equating the terms feminine, Eros, Moon, Soul. An unfortunate, added complication is that Jung is not consistent in his writings when using the terms.Ensoulment Introduction to the flow of masculine and feminine energies.Seminar 2 – Towards a better understanding of the Masculine PrincipleExplore the active, passive, positive, negative aspects of the masculine principle.Seminar 3 – Towards a new appreciation of the Feminine PrincipleThe feminine has both nurturing and transformative aspects, each can be constructive or destructive.Seminar 4 – What happens if the flow of energy between masculine and feminine energies is blocked? Were in the usual flow can fixation develop? What are the patterns of immaturity and pathology?Clinical exampleSchedule for the day08h30 – 09h00Arrival and coffee/tea09h00 – 10h30Seminar 110h30 – 11h00Coffee/tea and light refreshments11h00 – 12h30Seminar 212h30 – 13h30Lunch13h30 – 15h00Seminar 315h00 – 15h30Coffee/tea and refreshments15h30 – 17h00Seminar 4More about the presenterMarita de Wet is a Jungian Analyst practicing in Paarl.
