3rd Nine Weeks

Dear Parents,

The First Grade Team believes it is essential to keep you informed of the skills your child is learning in class. Over the course of each nine week period, your child will be taught specific skills in Language Arts, Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies. A list of these skills will be sent to you at the beginning of each grading period. Please take the opportunity to review these skills with your child throughout the nine weeks. We appreciate your active involvement in your child’s learning experience.

The skills that will be covered the third nine weeks are as follows:

Reading

• Apply knowledge of how print is organized and read

• Apply phonetic principles to read and spell

• Use meaning clues and language structure to expand vocabulary

• Read familiar stories, poems, and passages with fluency and expression

• Read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fiction and nonfiction

• Use simple reference materials

Language Arts

• Demonstrate growth in the use of oral language

• Continue to expand and use listening and speaking vocabularies

• Adapt or change oral language to fit the situation

• Orally identify and manipulate phonemes

Writing Domain

• Developing Correct Letter Formation and Spacing

• Write to communicate ideas

• Descriptive Words

• Opinion Writing/Writing Reviews

• Fiction Writing

• Fairytales

Math

• Time

• Place Value and Whole Number Operations

• Word Problems

• Fact Families

Social Science

• Economics

• American Leaders ( Lincoln, Washington,)
