English 10 will follow a similar format as Middle School Language Arts. The curriculum for the 2019-2020 school year will be Common Core Standards-centered and focus on key foundational skills that the students will need to learn in order to be successful readers and writers. Topics we will cover:PlotConflictCharacterizationSetting ThemeFigurative LanguageAnalysisOral presentation skillsWriting a variety of 4-5 paragraph essaysCreative WritingWhole-class Novel and Response-to-Literature -Throughout the school year, students will read various fiction and non-fiction novels. Students will work on summarizing, visualizing, determining author’s purpose, inferring, comprehension, explaining, recognizing character traits, using context, recognizing point-of-view, and defining vocabulary. While reading these novels, students will write daily response-to-literature journals that focus on summarizing, compare-and-contrast, forming opinions, and making accurate predictions. Students will also continue to work on editing and revising skills through 1:1 conferencing during Writer’s Workshop. Additional Texts – In addition to novels, we will incorporate short stories, poems, articles, and other documents that support the topics we are studying. These help further develop understanding of the novel and help build context. Writing - Writing will be a daily activity in many formats. Students will develop writing skills in a variety of ways such as: short responses, essays (persuasive, argumentative, research reports), and creative writing. Vocabulary building will be part of the Language Arts curriculum throughout the entire school year through Wordly Wise.Independent Reading – Students will be required to read an independent book of their choosing. Although it will be their choice, I will still need to approve it. Students will complete a reading log and we will have “check-in” conferences to discuss the book. Each student will present a book report upon completion of his or her book. More detailed information about that will be provided with the assignment sheet. In addition to academic grades, students receive participation points for each class. These points will effect final letter grades by 25%. These points are based on being prepared when class starts, respecting others in the class and materials, contributing to class discussions, and turning in assignments. ................
