The COVID-19 Community Risk Dial for the week of November16th is red,

meaning residents of southwest Nebraska are at severe risk of contracting

COVID-19. The risk level was raised due to high levels of community spread

across several counties and the threat of the healthcare system becoming

overwhelmed. The number of available hospital beds continues to decrease,

and healthcare workers need relief across the state. In addition to the positive cases, there are likely many more individuals who are infected but are

not getting tested. Those residents who do want to be tested may have to

wait and/or travel to be tested for COVID-19.Moving to red, Southwest

Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) recommends that residents

of the health district stay at home when possible, except for essential errands. If you do leave home, wear a mask or face covering. High-risk and

vulnerable individuals should limit their contact with those who work outside

the home. All gatherings and events are strongly discouraged until the risk

dial is no longer in the red. ¡°This pandemic is a public health emergency, but

luckily we know what to do to keep ourselves safe,¡± states Myra Stoney,

Health Director at SWNPHD. ¡°Just as we prepare for severe weather and

follow our plans when severe weather occurs, now is the time to put our

emergency plans into action. We want to limit the damage to our communities that other areas of the country have experienced during this pandemic.

Teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic has Nebraska educators overwhelmed, worried about their students, and their health and safety, according to a recent survey from the Nebraska State Education Association (NSEA).

Ninety-two percent of the more than 6,500 Nebraska public school educators who responded to the statewide survey say wearing masks should be

mandated for both teachers and students. The NSEA conducted the survey

from Oct. 23 ¨C Nov. 2 to assess its¡¯ members views and concerns about

teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. ¡°The responses left little doubt that

educators are at the breaking point,¡± said NSEA President Jenni Benson.

¡°They are concerned that the needs of their students are not being met. They

are worried about their health and safety and that of their students and

families. ¡°Many teachers are having to teach students both in-person and

remotely at the same time. That is exhausting teachers and making it nearly

impossible to provide quality teaching and learning for students,¡± said Benson.

The Nebraska men's basketball added its highest-ranked recruit in the

modern era on Friday, as Bryce McGowens signed a National Letter-ofIntent to attend Nebraska next season. McGowens, a 6-foot-6, 170pound guard from Pendleton, S.C., is a consensus top-35 national

recruit, and ranked as high as No. 23 nationally by Rivals. He is the

No. 26 recruit nationally by 247 Sports and No. 33 nationally by ESPN.

McGowens is the No. 3 shooting guard nationally in the 247 Sports

Composite, which combines all of the national major recruiting services. McGowens is the first-top 50 recruit to sign with the Huskers

coming out of high school in nearly 30 years. Nebraska Coach Fred

Hoiberg has signed the program's two-highest rated recruits in this

year's signing period. Wilhelm Breidenbach, who signed on Wednesday, is rated No. 53 nationally by ESPN.
