UNIT 4 – CREATING ANIMATION.Richard Collins164166-71120-397890P4 – Graphic Images00P4 – Graphic ImagesSource TableAssetTypeDescriptionSourceUsed:GraphicGrey scale clouds added to the scene to give the idea of day time and the general weather in the scene. This is the opening scene too, which I wanted to be a very positive scene to start the animation off with.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 1GraphicThis is a Bird. Pass: for pass criteria, I created a simple shape outline of a bird in the distance and used a classic tween to move it from one side of the screen to the other.Merit: for Merit, I refined the birds and added the bone tool to create a moving wings effect, so that when it moved from one side of the screen to the other, it appeared to be flapping its wings.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 1GraphicThis is a Tree.Pass: this appears on my opening scene next to my building, I created a simple green outlined shape and a brown oblong to create the simplistic tree I wanted.Merit: for the Merit criteria, I refined this asset and added details of darker green lines to the green, to give the appearance of leaves and added lighter brown strokes to the brown oblong to create the appearance of bark.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 1GraphicThis is a building (without windows!)Pass: for the pass criteria, I simply created a building made up of 3 grey oblongs and a darker outlining.Merit: for the Merit criteria, I refined the building and added darker lines onto inside of the boxes, to create the illusion of cracks in the building framework.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 1GraphicThis is a window, with the lights turned on.I created this window to go on top of the building asset to give the building a more realistic look in the opening scene. I used a dark outline to create a basic depth and a yellow colour to give the appearance of lights being on inside.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 1GraphicThis is the background for Scene 1 (opening scene)This is a simple blue sky background with dirt on the very bottom of the screen to indicate the difference between the sky and the ground.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 1GraphicThis is grass & dirt/mudThis grass goes next to the building and in front of the tree to give the feel of the building being next to an open field or some kind of garden.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 1GraphicThis is the background for scene 2.This is the background for the second scene. This uses a slightly darker colour than the first scene, to indicate that time has gone by just a little bit, so that in my storyline, you know the character is leaving work.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 2GraphicThis is my character, Dave. This is my only character in the story, who is the protagonist. This is the version for Scenes 2, 4, 8 and 9 which shows him walking from the left side to the right side of the stage.Merit: for the merit criteria, I edited all of the hairs on all the characters, to include wave lines, to give the appearance of depth and strands of hair.We have a side view of Dave, including a side view of his face and hair.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScenes 2,4,8 and 9GraphicThis is a barThis is the bar used in the third scene. In the scene the character is seen drinking at the bar. This asset has very little details, since it is a bar.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 3GraphicThis is a wall, The Background for Scene 3.This is my only outside sourced graphic I have used in this animation. It is a black and white wall with light shading in the middle that gradients outwards to darker edges. Scene 3GraphicThis is my character, Dave. This is my only character in the story, who is the protagonist. This is the version for Scene 3, which only shows from the waist up, because he is sitting at the bar in this scene.Merit: for the merit criteria, I edited all of the hairs on all the characters, to include wave lines, to give the appearance of depth and strands of hair. His hair is separate from his body in this asset but are the same thing. I created the hair on a new layer to avoid distortion when animating with the bone tool.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 3GraphicThis is a glass with drink in it.Pass: this is a glass that has a silver edge and a brown insides to create the image of some form of alcohol inside of a glass.Merit: for the merit criteria, I refined this asset and added small lines into the brown drink, which are very small, but give the illusion of a liquid substance inside of the glass.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 3GraphicThis is a set of bushes. These bushes are simplistic but are good for the scene. Since the scene is set in night time, they are darker and have darker lines to create the image of depth of leaves and layers.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 4GraphicThis is the background for scene 3, it is a dark night time with a grey path.I created a dark blue skyline so the viewer knew it was night time. The path is a dark grey with lighter grey lines placed around for cracks and gravel.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 4GraphicThis is a car/truck.Pass: This is the car that hits my character in this animation. For the pass criteria I used a simple colour of red for the fill and black lines, Grey and White were used for the windscreen and headlights.Distinction: for distinction criteria, I refined this asset and changed the simplistic Red colouring to a Gradient red. The headlights were changed to a White and black gradient circle and the windscreen was made with a left to right gradient, to give the illusion of reflective surface. I also added details to the wheels to create the depth lines on the wheel covers.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 5GraphicThis is my character, Dave. This is my only character in the story, who is the protagonist. This is the version for Scene 5, which shows from behind the character, as this is where the character steps onto an open road and is hit by a car.Merit: for the merit criteria, I edited all of the hairs on all the characters, to include wave lines, to give the appearance of depth and strands of hair.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 5GraphicThis is a road. This is a road that appears in scene 5. This road is dark with guide yellow lines in the centre. There are minor details added to the road in the flash animation to create the look of wear and tear. This is the road that the red car drives along before hitting the character in scene 5C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 5GraphicThis is the background for scene 5.In this background there is a dark blue sky, as the scene is set during night time and dark green grass which surrounds the white cut-out which the road asset goes into. I decided not to have the road be a part of the background for best drawing/editing ability.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 5GraphicThis is the hospital bed in scene 6This is a grey neutral coloured bed designed to create a very sterile and generic look, as how most hospitals look. The bed sits in the middle of the room next to a monitoring machine.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 6GraphicThis is the background for scene 6This is a hospital background, using whites and greys to give a neutral look to the room. Hospitals are very sterile so I created this using just pure colour as no dirt should be seen inside a hospital.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 6GraphicThis is my character, Dave. This is my only character in the story, who is the protagonist. This is the version for Scene 6, which only shows from the shoulders and up, as well as is angled as he is laying in the hospital bed in this scene.Merit: for the merit criteria, I edited all of the hairs on all the characters, to include wave lines, to give the appearance of depth and strands of hair.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 6GraphicThis is my character, Dave. This is my only character in the story, who is the protagonist. This is the version for Scene 7, which shows only from the top half up since he is driving his car in this scene.Merit: for the merit criteria, I edited all of the hairs on all the characters, to include wave lines, to give the appearance of depth and strands of hair.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 7GraphicThis is another car, different from the one seen in the previous scene. This is a blue car, which in the animation belongs to the character Dave. It is seen driving along the road in scene 7 as Dave is not drunk and can legally drive home.Distinction: for distinction criteria, I refined this asset and changed the simplistic Blue colouring to a Gradient blue. The headlights were changed to a White and black gradient circle and the windscreen was made with a left to right gradient, to give the illusion of reflective surface. I also added details to the wheels to create the depth lines on the wheel covers.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 7GraphicThis is another road, different from the one before, seen in scene 7.This road is different from the one in the previous scene as it does not have any paths or anything connecting to it. This is just a road without anywhere for pedestrians to walk, we can assume in the animation that Dave drove on this road instead of walking the way he did before as a short cut of some kind.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 7GraphicThis is the background for scene 7.This is a simplistic background for scene 7, which has dark green for the fields of grass surrounding and a bright blue sky as scene 7 is still daytime. There is very little detail on this asset as most of the details are multiple assets applied together to create the scene.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 7GraphicThis is a sofa/couchThis is a solid brown yolk sofa/couch seen in scene 8. It is inside of Dave’s home which he sits and rests on before he goes to bed later on in the night.Distinction: for the distinction criteria I refined this asset by adding light lines all around the sofa to create the look wrinkles of the fabric and depth of the sofa.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 8GraphicThis is a green rug. This is a solid green yolk rug seen in scene 8 inside of Dave’s home. This rug does have refinements but not classified as Merit or Distinction refinements. The refinement is a few solid colour lines around the rug to create the look and feel of fabric.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 8GraphicThis is the background for scene 8, Dave’s home. This is the background seen in scene 8, which is Dave’s living room inside of his home. This background is just 2 plain yolk colours, Green-yellow and light blue. There are little definitions in this background as most of the definitions came from the furniture placed via multiple asserts in this scene.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 8GraphicThis is a duvet/bed cover.Seen in scene 9, this is the final scene part of the “what if” category. This duvet/bed cover was just a solid green yolk colour before refinements were made for distinction criteria.Distinction: for the distinction criteria I refined this asset and added lighter lines to create the look of wrinkles in the fabric. I made these lines a lot light than the colour of the green due to the already lightness of the green colour.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 9GraphicThese are pillowsThese are 2 pillows which appear in Scene 9 on Dave’s bed. They were a simplistic dark grey yolk but were refined for distinction criteria.Distinction: for the distinction criteria, I refined this assets and once again added light lines to create the look of the fabric being wrinkled. I chose light grey for the line colour to make sure it stood out enough for people to see.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 9GraphicThis is a bed.Seen in scene 9, this is the bed that Dave walks up too and lays down on. This bed is a simple grey for the sheets and brown for the headboard. There is nothing on this bed such as pillows or blankets because these were created as separate assets, to help improve the animation.Distinction: for the distinction criteria, I refined this asset and added detailing to the head board to create the look of detailed patterns engraved into the wood. I chose a light brown colour to create the detailing so that it wouldn’t be so obvious and would be something you needed to look closer to see, this is because of realistic wooden designs are not always easily identifiable to the naked eye and I wanted to re-create that for this animation. C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 9GraphicThis is the background for scene 9, Dave’s bedroomI created this background with basic light blue and light green yolk colours. The colours were based on a “mans” bedroom, since the character is a male. There is very little definitions in this scene, since most of it was created by the furniture placed in the scene in the animationC:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 9GraphicThis is my character, Dave. This is my only character in the story, who is the protagonist. This is the version for Scene 10, which shows Dave after the hospital with a cast on his arm. In this scene he waves to the camera as wording pops up informing people to Drink Responsibly.Merit: for the merit criteria, I edited all of the hairs on all the characters, to include wave lines, to give the appearance of depth and strands of hair.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 10WordingThis is one of two pieces of wording that appear in the end of scene 10.The wording is simplistic Red and is designed to inform the viewer to drink responsibly. The font is called “Deusex” and the size is 51pts.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 10WordingThis is second of two pieces of wording that appear in the end of scene 10.The wording is simplistic Red and is designed to inform the viewer to not do the same actions as Dave did in the animation and to make the better choices. The font is called “Deusex” and the size is 51pts.C:\Users\Richard\OneDrive\Documents\U4\AssetsScene 10Sounds TableAssetTypeDescriptionSourceUsed:SoundA background audio of a crowd in the bar. Since this was a background audio, it needed to be very quiet. It also need to be quiet so you could hear the voice over on the animation. Using Adobe Auditions, I reduced the volume by -14db, so that you clear hear everything else in the scene. The timescale being 8m 9s did not fit the purpose of the scene which was only around 6 seconds long. I chose the most suitable part of the sound, which was near the middle and cut it down to just 6 seconds. When applied to the scene, it was not too loud or too long and met what it was intended to do very well.Sound edit 2-558803810000Before-62340637800AfterThis is the bar background audio for scene 4.In the original file, the sound is too loud and too long to fit the scenes purpose. On this sound file, I reduced the volume by -17db to be more of an ambience sound for the room. The sound was also too long as it was 5m 18s and I only need around 4 seconds. I chose a point in the middle of the sound and cut out 4 seconds for the scene. Now that it is shorter, it fits the scene better.Image edit 1BeforeAfterThis is the tree from Scene 1.The before is not filled fully and looks very cheap and shows little filling. I changed this asset to a filled colour to fit the scene better.I filled in the green with a different shade of green and the brown with the same brown as the edging.Image edit 2BeforeAfterThis is the building from Scene 1.I started with a blotchy building, hoping it would be more realistic. However I found that using a full fill grey colour with black outlines was more realistic and suitable to the scene.P6 – Review of Final Animation for PASS CriteriaI believe my quality of animation is suitable and meeting the standards required for the audience. While this is to advertise and promote healthy living and advise against drinking heavily, it is not a professional animation that needs in-depth detail. This animation is a 30 short, designed to advertise the dangers of not living healthy. My characters are simple and catchy to the eye, if I had gone into too much detail it would have distracted the audience of teenagers from the message of the short and gotten them interested in the design of the character, perhaps comparing them to characters in cartoons or animations that they watch for amusement. The purpose is to educate, in a colourful way, the dangers of drinking without knowing the limitations your body has. I believe the colours and techniques used to design, draw and animate all the assets in this animation will appeal to my audience of young teenagers and keep their attention on the motive behind the animation. I did not design specific realistic details into the animation, such as blood and gore for when the character is hit by the car, as I did not want to be too graphic, as this could upset some sensitive people, but we needed to show that accidents can happen when you are not fully in control of your actions, when you have drunken too much.In my design, it showed mostly what I have drawn, but certain things are different. As I was creating the scene in both colour and using digital graphical tools, I found the scenes to be lacking the same appeal as they did in the black and white, pencil drawings. I felt as if I had to add more to them to get the same response from the audience in particular scenes. One example is the addition of a walkway to the scene where our character is hit by a car. When I designed this scene, I did not think about how the character got onto the road and so in the animation/digital version, I added a path way on the side of the road, which has a crossing across the road. I feel as if this shows the dangers of being drunk and wandering around, as you are less likely to look before crossing a road and so this scene now made sense in storyline.I found certain assets on the internet that had been watermarked, which I would have liked to have used, but the content creators did not give permission for anyone to use. I found this to be an annoying problem, as I feel certain assets mixed with my own would have led to a better animation and better details added to the final product. When working on the animation, we were under such a tight schedule that we had to work as fast as possible and we had to put in many hours, which made us work long hours sitting at a computer, in software such as Adobe Flash Professional? or typing the document out. Any assets I used from the internet, such as audio and visual assets, I made sure to scan with my anti-virus before adding to my folder and then into my animation. I wanted to be sure it would not affect both my PC and Animation, as this could have possibly corrupted the animation, if not my PC too.In my first creation of the animation, I had gotten up to scene 3 without backing it up when Flash crashed and corrupted my file. Unfortunately I had to start again, but I was able to recover my individual assets, I just had to re place them on the scene and add the animations again. After this incident, I decided to make regular backups and publish the file swf format every half an hour, to ensure that I had 2 modes of backups. As I got towards the end of the animation, I began to create backups of the backups for extra security, as the file had become heavier and with more to load, I felt it had become more prone to crashes. Luckily I was mistaken, but it was always a good idea to make many backups.I felt the strengths of my animation were its simplicity, storyline and design, as well as the Animations used to create a realistic looking cartoon. These all added up to create my first ever animation, which I feel did not turn out too bad. It is not as perfect as I would have liked it, but since this was my very first time working with professional software such as Adobe Flash Professional?, I feel my animation is a good start point to possibly creating future animation projects. If I had more time, I would have created more detailed graphical assets and better sound voice over assets, as well as extend the time to tell a longer story of reckless drinking. If I was to re-do a project like this one, I would ensure I took backups all the time, use Adobe Flash Professional CC? instead of CS6, as it is a much more stable release. I would also take more time to plan how I would like my animation to look.M3 – (In Table under P4)M4 – FeedbackFeedback 1:Name of animationHealthy eatingDate of reviewing 28/01/2016Name of reviewer Chantele ClementsQuestionComment Was the animation of sufficient length (at least 30 seconds?)The think the animation is more than 30 seconds long, I can tell this by each scene is long. Was the purpose and target audience clear?I can tell the animation is about drinking because the character is in the bar in one of the scenes and I know the target audience is young teens and adultsWas the story line clear and did it make sense?I understand the story line is about drinking and having an accident Was the animation smooth and reasonably realistic? All the scenes are smooth and the character moves his feet accordingly and I think everything in this animation is realistic. Where the graphic acceptable quality? All the images that was used in the animation are high quality as some of the features fit well with the scenes Was the audio of acceptable quality and audible? There were many sounds that was played on the animation that fit well together, the scene were the character is sitting in the bar drinking his drink you can hear the people talking in the background and you can hear the sound of the class hitting the table Overall do you think the animation is fit for its intended purpose?I think the animation fits the intended purpose of safe drinking and teaches people how to stay alive when going out for a drink. What do you think the strengths of the animation are?The strengths of the animations are the designs of the characters and the sounds that have been used in the scenes What do you think the weaknesses of the animation are?The building in scene 1 could have more detail. The Tree also in scene 1 could also have some depth detail. Was the animation smooth and reasonably realistic? All the scenes appear very well and the animations show quite realistic details. Where the graphic acceptable quality? The images are drawn so they do meet the quality of the overall animation Was the audio of acceptable quality and audible? You can hear a person giving a voice over and general background audio Overall do you think the animation is fit for its intended purpose?I believe it is fit for its purpose, as it is showing a part of healthy living, which is drinking in moderation. What do you think the strengths of the animation are?Strengths are the simplistic designs used in the storyline as well as some of the audio effects. What do you think the weaknesses of the animation are?Certain parts of the Voice over are a little hard to hear and some details on certain assets could use some depth refinement. Any other comments?Merit edit 1BeforeAfterThis is the hair of the main character in my animation. In the pass criteria animation, the hair is just a simple colour fill but in the refinements I made for the merit criteria, I added lighter lines to the hair to give the impression of depth and hairlines.Merit edit 2BeforeAfterThis is the windscreen on the car on in Scene 7. In the pass criteria version, the windscreen is just a simple grey fill to create the look of glass, for the merit refinement, I changed the windscreen from a grey fill to a gradient grey to black fill. This makes the windscreen look reflective and more realistic.Merit edit 2BeforeAfterThese are the Car lights in Scene 5.In my pass animation, the lights were a simple white dot which showed the lights being on. For a merit refinement, I changed these lights to a gradient circle fill, to create the look that the lights are shining and are bright. The gradient fill shows the lights brighter in the middle and becoming more grey towards the outer edges, showing a light and bulb effect.M5 – Improve P6 (add info about Feedback and Refined assets)I believe my quality of animation is suitable and meeting the standards required for the audience. I would also take more time to plan how I would like my animation to look. The feedback I received showed me that I had created a good animation and only a few changes had to be made to make it a little better. I took in the feedback and spoke to the people who gave me the feedback. I worked on specific assets to add details as needed until they felt it was more appropriate for the scenery and animation in general. The assets refined were simple parts of the scenery, such as Trees or Bushes, which just required a few extra lines added to give simple effects of leaves being on the trees and bushes, or cracks in a pavement/road. I did not have to use any new software or tools to carry out these refinements, just the same tools I used to create the animation. I simply added lines that were either lighter or darker than the background they were applied to, giving the appearance of depth or items attached to parts of the assets. These small minor changes made the animation just a little more realistic, adding to the already fit for purpose animation. When creating these assets we had to think about the legal constraints when using other people’s assets. Most of the visual assets I used were my own, but I did use one visual asset from the internet which I had to make sure to credit to the original creator to ensure that I did not infringe on their copyrighted content. There are multiple pieces of content I would have liked to have used but were unable too.Another thing we had to consider was its appropriation for the audience. Since my audience was not younger children, but teenagers and young adults, I could show a more mature situation and give certain details pertaining to the situation presented in the animation. In this animation we see someone get too drunk and hit by a car, this is a very serious situation and would not be appropriate if I was going for a younger audience, but since my audience is a little bit older, they will be able to handle the situation presented and react properly to it.Certain audio assets I had to download from websites on the internet, because of this, I was unsure if the files were safe to download. The only way to be sure was to scan each file as I downloaded it to ensure they did not contain any viruses or anything that could compromise my computers security.D3 – Refine assets (In table above)D4 – Evaluate the final animation.I believe my quality of animation is suitable and meeting the standards required for the audience. The only way to be sure was to scan each file as I downloaded it to ensure they did not contain any viruses or anything that could compromise my computers security. My final version of my animation, I have refined more assets and added new animations. One of the refinements was adding the movements of the bird’s wings to the birds in the first scene. In my original animation, the birds just moved along the screen almost hovering. Now that I have refined them, I have added the wings flapping a bit using the bone tool to make it seem a bit more realistic. Other assets include adding simple highlights to the characters hair, to make it seem more realistic as the light is catching the hair in different scenes. I have also changed textures on the cars from a yolk fill to a gradient fill to make them seem more metallic instead of just filled in. I have also changed the windscreen and lights from colour fills to gradients, to make them appear reflective and lighting up respectively. I have also refined the buildings in the first scene to have wear and tear cracks to make it appear older and more realistic instead of a brand new perfect looking building. All of these refinements have been using the simple tools of flash, such as adding new lines that are either darker or lighter than the base colour used.I feel as if the new refinements added with the old refinements which were carried out after receiving feedback have made this animation stronger as a product and have made it more appealing to the targeted audience. If given the time and software availability, there are multiple changes I would make to this animation. Firstly I would have changed how the characters walk, making them walk much more smoother and realistic, without having the bone tool damage the lines of the legs. I believe this would have made my animation stronger and much more fit for the purpose. In addition to making the animation smoother, I would have liked to make the walking sound effects much more in time with the actual steps made by the character, making them more in sync. Due to limit on time and limit of my abilities, I was unable to sync these together, which I feel has let my animation down a little. If given the time, I would have liked to have animated things such as the Trees, to make them move with the wind. At the moment, the only changes I made to the trees were graphical and not animated. It would have made the animation look a lot more professional if the trees moved with the breeze which can be heard in the sound effects. Finally, I would have liked to have had better quality in voice over quality. Due to the import feature of the Flash software, my voice overs, which recorded clearly, did not keep its quality when importing to the animation. When imported, I lost a lot of quality in speaking, making it very hard to hear what is being said without having loud volume. If I had the time, I would have liked to tweak the audio assets to either make the voice over clearer or the sound effects quieter, so that they do not overlap the voice over speaking. While I am happy with most of my animation, there is a lot I would like to change, given the chance. Due to the time limits and ability limits, I feel my animation is reaching the best of its potential and is not bad for a first attempt at any form of animation, using Flash software for the very first time.I feel as this is a strength for a first ever animation. This animation shows certain techniques that I have learned and used, which could be used to show others that I have a small knowledge about flash software and animation, as well as that I can learn new skills in developing flash animation using flash software. ................
