PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Studio Museum in Harlem offers paid full-time and part-time 10-week internships during both the summer and academic year. The Museum seeks college and graduate level students as well as recent graduates for internships in: Curatorial, Education and Public Programs, Public Relations and Publications, Director’s Office, Development and Finance. Computer skills are essential and foreign language skills may be helpful.

The Museum’s Internship Program provides students with a wide range of experiences designed to provide insight into the daily workings of a professional museum environment. Additionally, interns engage in a series of workshops, meetings, offsite visits and public programs.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM

The Studio Museum in Harlem is the nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally, and internationally and for work that has been inspired and influenced by black culture. It is a site for the dynamic exchange of ideas about art and society.

REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS

Students interested in applying for an internship at The Studio Museum in Harlem must complete the following application and send a resume, one official transcript, and one personal letter explaining reasons for applying to the Internship Program. Personal letters should include what you hope to gain from the experience, what you feel you can contribute to the department for which you are applying, and how the internship might enhance your education and career plans.

Please note that the deadline date refers to the date by which applications must be postmarked. Application deadlines are fixed, no exceptions. The Studio Museum will not review applications submitted after the deadline, or incomplete applications. You will only receive a confirmation email if we receive your complete application package.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTIONS

CURATORIAL INTERNSHIP

The Curatorial Internship is designed for college freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students, who major/minor in Art History, Visual Culture or a related-field. Curatorial interns will work under the direction of the Assistant Curator. Applicants should have an interest in curating, excellent writing and research skills, and knowledge of the contemporary art world. Applicants must be able to handle multiple projects at once. Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop is required.

CURATORIAL INTERNSHIP- PROJECT ASSISTANT

The Studio Museum in Harlem is preparing an extended large-format book of twentieth-century photographs of Harlem with an international publishing company and are seek a Curatorial Intern/Project Assistant to work under the direction of the Curatorial Assistants.

The Curatorial Intern/Project Assistant will be responsible for researching image reproduction rights; communicating with photography agencies and individuals to request rights to reproduce images and to secure digital files of images; and organizing the internal database of relevant images. Applicants should have excellent communication and research skills. Knowledge of twentieth-century photography is a plus.

DIRECTOR’S OFFICE INTERNSHIP

Director’s Office interns will work closely with the Assistant to the Director and Chief Curator. Administrative responsibilities include performing clerical functions, archive organization, and handling information requests. Applicants must work well independently and problem-solve with creativity. Meticulous attention to detail is absolutely necessary.

The Director’s Office Internship is designed for college juniors, seniors and graduate students who are preparing for careers in Art/Art History, Museum Studies, or Arts Administration.

EDUCATION AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS INTERNSHIP

Education and Public Programs interns work closely with Education and Public Programs department staff on research and development of adult, youth, and community programs for upcoming exhibition seasons. Some evening and weekend hours are required of the position.

The Education and Public Programs Internship is designed for undergraduate students who are preparing for careers in Art Education, Arts Administration, Museum Studies, or related fields.

DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP

Development interns work closely with the Associate Development Director to help with the Studio Museum’s fundraising and membership efforts. Primary responsibilities include assisting in organizing fundraising events, conducting research on corporations and foundations, and organizing mailings of information to donors and prospects. Previous design, marketing and public relations experience is helpful but not required.

The Development Internship is designed for undergraduate students interested in careers in Arts Administration, Museum Studies, Marketing, or related fields.

PUBLIC RELATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS

Public Relations and Publications interns work closely with the Public Relations Manager and Editor-in-Chief on file preparation, research, organization and content management for Studio

magazine, the Museum’s seasonal publication. The intern will also assist with developing press releases for upcoming exhibitions, preparing press kits and general press related inquiries. Applicant must possess excellent communication and writing skills and be proficient in Photoshop and working with digital files (knowledge of Illustrator is a plus). Good organizational and time management skills and an ability to work independently are essential.

The Public Relations and Publications Internship is designed for undergraduate and graduate students interested in careers in Arts Administration, Media Studies, Marketing, or related fields.

FINANCE INTERNSHIP (Summer only)

Finance Interns report directly to the Finance Manager assisting in day-to-day operations of the Finance office. Projects may include assisting the finance staff in preparing fiscal year files for yearly audits, setup of new budget figures in the accounting system and insuring accuracy of the approved budget. The Finance Intern will be trained to use the Studio Museum accounting system. Computer skills are essential.

The Finance Internship is designed for college juniors who are preparing for careers

in Accounting, Finance, Business Management or related fields.
