The Newsletter of the Mother Lode DX/Contest Club

MEETING DATE, LOCATION & PROGRAM

What: The September meeting of the Mother Lode DX/Contest Club. The planned program for the Sept. meeting will be about the Feb. 2007 expedition to Larga Island, IOTA NA-246, in the Tamaulipas State of Eastern Mexico as XF2K. The operation was made difficult conditions due to weather as well as propagation at the bottom of the sun spot cycle.

Where: Mountain Mike's Pizza in Martell on September 15 at regular time. Mtn. Mike's is where the Round Table Pizza was formerly located. It is in the shopping center with Save-Mart-ex Albertson's on Highway 88, just west off Highway 49. Our meeting room is reserved from 11 AM-3 PM.

When: Saturday, September 15 at our regular time (The room is reserved from 11AM-3PM.)

FROM THE PREZ

Start thinking about the direction you want the Mother Lode DX/Contest Club to taking in 2008. Who do you want to be President, vice-President, etc.?? Do you want more emphasis on operating, DXing, contesting or…??? Do ‘YOU’ want to be an officer??

The 4 element SteppIR I ordered at the International DX Convention in April arrived early September. Now I need to straighten out the base so the tower will stand somewhere near plumb.

MLDX/CCers heard/worked in CW Sprint-Sept. 9; KF6T, K6TA, AE6Y, N6XI, AD6E. There may have been others as I missed ‘common’ multipliers such as MI, IL, for instance. The SSB Sprint is next Saturday, after our meeting. It starts at 0000Z/5 PM local and runs for four hours ‘til 0400/9 PM. Special QSY rules apply. Full rules at the NCJ web site.

Let’s all get on for as much as possible for CQP-the California QSO Party on October 6 & 7 and keep our string of club competition wins intact. If you can’t operate yourself, consider making your station available.

2006. CQ doing a lot better job getting the certificates out. New grandson born this morning, Walter Kenneth Anderson 8lb 14oz. Ken, K6TA (congrats to U and Kay on all! de Ed)

2007.

I finished 14th overall in the low

power category of the Stew Perry contest, and highest on the west coast. Best DX: ZL.

The 160 meter antennas is getting ready for the next Stew Perry, I put up three 60 foot irrigation tubing masts at the back of my property (1/4 mile from the road), and put a pair of full size 160 meter dipoles on them, at 30 ft and 60 ft high. I can remotely connect one of them at a time to the feedline; the one not in use is disconnected from the coax so it will not interact with the other one.

I have been A/B'ing these with each other and also with the 90 ft transmitting vertical, as a reference antenna. Already, I have gotten some very interesting results in these comparisons. I will continue to gather data throughout the upcoming season.

The Monstir tilt plate is finally completed I posted photos at:

Now I have started assembly of the MonstIR itself. Rick N6RK

I guess that I'm on some kind of roll this year - DX wise. In addition to snagging QSLs for 80 meter contacts with N8S and HP1XX to complete my 5BDXCC (all running low power), I've also increased by confirmed country count from 303 to 310 in just the last 4 months. QSLs received for new ones include VU7RG, 4O3T, ST2R, 9U0X, BS7H, 4W6AAV, and OJ0/SM0EPO.

Unfortunately, I'm going to miss CQP this year, since I will be joining my wife at a Chiropractic seminar in LA that weekend. The good news is that we're headed directly to Disneyland as soon as the seminar ends. Included in the trip is a week's stay in a condo right on the beach, 1/2 way between LA and San Diego. I'm excited!! (Congrats on all, de Ed.) Jim -WX6V-

I have for sale a Yaesu, DVS-2, Digital Memory Recorder s/n 6I022.  I will accept the best offer for it and ship it via UPS.

This unit will interface with any of the FT-1000, FT-1000D, FT-1000MP, FT-1000MP-Field or FT-1000 Mk-V series transceivers.  It will record and transmit messages via it's memory (as a voice-keyer) or record off-air receiver audio.  The unit is in very good physical condition, and functions as new. I also have the original box and manual. de Rick,W6SR (530) 672-2885

EDITOR’S NOTES

The past month I participated in the first weekend (as well as K6QG, and N6JV) of the 10 GHz contest. The second weekend is the same date as our club meeting, Lyle and I will have a couple of 10GHz stations at the meeting. If you are interested in seeing what they look like, let us know and we will give ya’ a show and tell.

I worked a few HF DX contacts the past month, but no new ones, and nothing very interesting.

We had K0YW (ex K6JYO) and his wife here for a few days. For those of you who don’t know Bruce, check out last month’s QST and see what can be done on the 1296/2403Mhz bands. Earlier this year, he put-on a 1296/2304 DXpedition to KH6 and made a lot of UHF’er happy with a new country on those bands. While Bruce and Patti we here, we even had an impromptu DX dinner with several of the MLDXCC club members at the local Cattlemen’s.

Last month, I did mostly indoor stuff, it’s been too damn hot to do much outside. Or, we have been out driving the Corvette, with the air-conditioner blasting of course. Not much radio stuff except some computer antenna design/testing of some ideas that have been rattling around in old brain for a while. But, the weather is getting cooler and I have several antenna projects planned which I hope to finish before winter.

I had an invite to go to Fiji, with a group of No. Cal & So. Cal guys, to operate the CQWW contest in October. But I haven’t fully regained my strength, since my April surgery, and I don’t want to be an anchor to the group. So reluctantly I declined. Maybe I’ll feel 100 % by next year?

The 756 Pro III works great, and I am happy that I changed radios, but I’m still learning new things about it every time I turn it on. This must be age thing. Ya’ think? Enough for now, CU all the 15th. de Rick W6SR

Candidate for Vice Director of ARRL Pacific Division

I am Rob Brownstein, K6RB. June marked my 49th year of active ham radio operations. During those years, I operated CW, phone, and digital modes. I ragchewed, chased DX and participated in various contests. I operated in Field Day and joined local amateur radio clubs in the various places that I’ve lived and operated. In other words, I have enjoyed a broad swath of all the things that ham radio operators do.

Your choice for vice director will serve for the next three years. My opponent wants you to choose him because he has focused almost exclusively on emergency communications, and says that is the primary function for which ham radio is recognized and affirmed.

Most non-hams do get their impressions of ham radio from news stories about hams stepping in during emergencies. But, is that the only thing we do?

All of you know there’s a lot more to ham radio than that, and while emergency communications is a wonderful service to our communities, it is just one aspect of our hobby. To be fully represented, you need someone who knows what you do, whether it’s HF or VHF operation, DXing, contesting, ragchewing, or experimenting. And I’ve done them all.

Who is better suited to serve the diverse needs of today’s Pacific Division amateurs? Do you want someone who does one thing and reads about the others? Or do you want someone who does pretty much all of the same things you do? My opponent and I are both good people, and we want to do what’s best for this division. We just come at it from different places. He’s a specialist; and I am a well-rounded generalist. If you want broad rather than narrow, please give me your vote. 73, Rob Brownstein, K6RB

General Meeting Minutes, 11 August 2007.

Dick Wilson, K6LRN, President Pro Tem, called the meeting to order at 12:25 PM, following lunch at our new venue, Mountain Mike’s Pizza, located in the old Round Table Pizza location in Martell, CA. In attendance were 17 members and 1 guest.

Officers’ Roll Call. President Pro Tem Dick, Director Ken Anderson, K6TA, Director Ray Parker, ND6S, Director Rich Hill, NU6T, Treasurer Carolyn Wilson, K6TKD and Secretary Kay Anderson, K6KO, were present.

Secretary’s Minutes and Treasurer’s Report. The Secretary’s Minutes and Treasurer’s Reports of 19 May 2007 and 9 June 2007 were accepted as printed in the July Nugget newsletter.

Membership. Two membership renewals were received at the July joint meeting with the NCCC, and an additional renewal was received by mail. President Pro Tem Dick presented four new applications for membership: Carl Cook, AI6V; Rich Cutler, WC6H; John Miller, K6MM; and Kevin Rowett, K6TD. Rich Cutler, the only applicant present, was asked to leave for the discussion and vote, all four applications were accepted and voted in and Rich was welcomed as a new member.

Pacificon 2007. This year’s ARRL Pacificon will be held on October 20th. Discussion took place regarding the upcoming election of the ARRL Pacific Division Vice-Director. Andy Oppel, N6AJO, is the incumbent, and Rob Brownstein, K6RB, is also running for the office, as detailed in his e-mail to the Club.

New Venue and Upcoming Programs.

Membership in attendance okayed the new venue at Mountain Mike’s and it was agreed that the September 15th and October 13th meetings will be held there. Secretary Kay reserved the back room for those two dates. The November 10th meeting will be held at the Colina de Oro restaurant in Plymouth, CA. Program for the September meeting will be presented by N6JV, Norm Wilson.

Field Day. Field Day organizer Jim Venneman, WX6V, provided a final report on this year’s event at Peddler Hill. The Club entered as Class 1A and achieved 6,698 points; last year’s win was approximately 5,000, so this year’s score should hold up well. The original estimate of 1500 QSOs was topped by 193, bringing the QSO total to 1,693, 70% of which were CW QSOs. Kudos went out to AI6V for his portable 60-foot crank-up tower.

Adjournment and Program. The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 PM and following a short break, the 5A7A video was shown, ending at 1:40 PM.

PROPAGATION FORECAST Bulletin from the AARL

SB PROP ARL ARLP037 ARLP037 Propagation de K7RA

In little more than two weeks the northern hemisphere will see the Autumnal Equinox, marking the start of Fall north of the equator and the beginning of Spring south of the equator. The exact time when both northern and southern hemispheres are bathed in equal sunlight is 0951z, September 23, 2007. Even with few sunspots, this is the best time for long distance communications between hemispheres.

One change West Coast stations may notice is the summertime openings in the evening toward Asia on 20 and 17 meters will be shortening, but daytime propagation should improve.

For instance, in mid-August from California to Japan, after sunset on the West Coast (around 0300z), the path on 20 meters would open, with steadily increasing signals until sundown in Japan (around 0930z).

But at the start of Fall, the path will close a few hours earlier, but with stronger signals during the day. From Texas to Brazil, with low sunspot numbers 15 meters in mid-August is not usually a reliable path.

But with one or two sunspots at the equinox, 15 meters becomes very reliable from the middle of North America to South America. This year we began looking at a 3-month moving average of daily sunspot numbers. We wanted to see if this might be a good balance between smoothing out the daily variations to help spot trends, but three months being a short enough period (compared to a 12 month moving average) that it better reacts to changes. Last month's Propagation Forecast Bulletin ARLP032 () said if we saw an average sunspot number greater then 20 for August, this would support a trend with the sunspot minimum centered in March 2007.

Unfortunately, the average was about half that, at 9.9. So that makes the 3 month June-July-August average 15.4 centered on July, compared to 18.7 for the end of last month, centered on June.

Here is the latest update on the 3-month moving average of daily sunspot numbers: Dec 05 40.6 Jan 06 32.4 Feb 06 18.1 Mar 06 27.7 Apr 06 38.5 May 06 39.7 Jun 06 28.9 Jul 06 23.3 Aug 06 23.5 Sep 06 21.2 Oct 06 24.1 Nov 06 23.1 Dec 06 27.3 Jan 07 22.7 Feb 07 18.5 Mar 07 11.2 Apr 07 12.2 May 07 15.8 Jun 07 18.7 Jul 07 15.4

Monthly averages of daily sunspot numbers for April 2006 through August 2007 were 55.2, 39.6, 24.4, 22.6, 22.8, 25.2, 14.7, 31.5, 22.2, 28.2, 17.3, 9.8, 6.9, 19.8, 20.7 , 15.6 and 9.9.

Monthly averages of daily solar flux for the same period were 88.9, 80.9, 76.5, 75.8, 79, 77.8, 74.3, 86.3, 84.4, 83.5, 77.7, 72.2, 72.4, 74.4, 73.7, 71.6 and 69.2.
