Sample secular A.A. meeting format (Chair reads :) Hello, everyone. Welcome to the regular weekly meeting of the (name of group) of Alcoholics Anonymous. My name is _____________ and I’m an alcoholic. I’ve asked _______________to read A.A.’s (closed or open) meeting statement.I’ve asked _______________to read the A.A. Preamble.I’ve asked _______________ to read a portion of Chapter 3 of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous (or other A.A. General Service-conference approved literature).I’ve asked _______________ to read a portion of the A.A. pamphlet, Many Paths to Spirituality (or other A.A. General Service Conference-approved literature).(Chair reads :) This is a secular meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous. Our meeting format does not include the recitation of any prayers or readings that invoke the name of any deity. We strive to maintain an atmosphere of free expression in which alcoholics may openly voice any doubts or disbeliefs they may have about any aspect of A.A.’s suggested program of recovery. We neither endorse nor oppose any form of religion or atheism. Many of us know from experience that anyone with desire to stop drinking can find sobriety in A.A. without having to accept anyone else’s beliefs. Is anyone here for their first-ever A.A. Meeting? (If so, we may consider selecting Step One of A.A.’s 12 steps as a discussion topic.)Is anyone attending this meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous for the first time? Are there any A.A. anniversaries or milestones to be noted tonight? Are there any A.A. related announcements? In keeping with A.A.’s Seventh Tradition, we will now pass the basket because we are self-supporting through our own contributions. Anyone with a court slip to be signed may place it in the basket. Would anyone like to suggest a topic for discussion? The meeting is now open for discussion.(Discussion)It’s now time to close our meeting in the usual manner, with a recitation of A.A.’s Responsibility Declaration: “I am responsible. When anyone, anywhere reached out for help, I want the hand of A.A. always to be there. And for that: I am responsible.”(Alternative closing for an open or newcomers’ meeting): It’s now time to close our meeting. Because A.A. is not allied with any religious sect or denomination, we will not close this meeting by reciting a prayer, as is customary at many other A.A. meetings. We will simply invite you to keep coming back, and declare this meeting adjourned. ................
