Steps to install SP1 for Office Professional Plus for Office 365

This was very painful indeed. Here are my notes. Hopefully this will save you (and others in the K community) some time...

A few points to note for starters. It’s a pretty simply list, but took me many hours to get this information.

1. The bits for Office Pro Plus for Office 365 are different than the bits for Office Pro Plus via MS volume licensing.

2. The MicrosoftOffice.EXE installer for Office Pro Plus for Office 365, which you download from the Office 365 site, does NOT include SP1.

3. This is the only installer available from Microsoft for Office Pro Plus for Office 365. You can search until you are blue in the face, you will not find an installer to download that includes SP1.

4. After installing Office Pro Plus for Office 365, Windows Updates will show that you are missing "Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Office 2010 *(KB2510690) "

5. After installing Office Pro Plus for Office 365, Kaseya will show that you are missing "Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Office 2010 *(KB2510690) "

6. If you try to deploy the SP1 patch via Kaseya, it will fail.

7. If you manually downloaded the "officesuite2010sp1-kb2460049-x86-fullfile-en-us.exe" file, and manually tried to run it, you will get the popup error message "The expected version of the product was not found on the system."

8. If you try to deploy the SP1 patch via Windows Update, it will work successfully.

9. The “real” problem is with the installer wrapper for the SP1 files, not the actually underlying files that get patched.

There are two ways to deal with this situation. They are as follows:

1. Get the SP1 files and extract them to a subfolder under your installation folder, and they will then get deployed as part of the base installation.

2. If the software is already installed, patch using a different method.

To include SP1 in the Office Professional Plus for Office 365 install, follow these steps.

1. Download the Office Professional Plus from the Office 365 Portal. It will download as an “Exe” file. The file is MicrosoftOffice.exe .

2. Please extract the files as shown below :

\MicrosoftOffice.exe /extract

In the extracted files you will see a folder called Updates

3. Download SP1 for Office 2010 :

4. Extract the file from the SP1 exe by the below :

Open command prompt

\Officesuite2010sp1-kb2460049-x64-fullfile-en-us.exe /extract

5. Copy all of the MSP files (don’t need the XML files) from extracting SP1 and place them into the \Updates folder in the previous image. Now the Updates folder should include the following:

6. Double click Setup.exe to run the install of Office 2010. During the install, SP1 will be installed as long as the MSP files from SP1 are in the Updates folder. (or you can create a Kaseya script to run Setup.exe, which is what we did. You can also create a transform file using normal Office deployment methods, so that the install via Kaseya can be silent)

Installing SP1 on a machine which already has Office Pro Plus for Office 365 installed

1. Download SP1 for Office 2010 :

2. Extract the file from the SP1 exe by the below :

Open command prompt

\Officesuite2010sp1-kb2460049-x64-fullfile-en-us.exe /extract

3. Open the folder which contains the MSP from extracting SP1. Please copy the MSP files from that folder and place them in the Updates folder from MicrosoftOffice.exe .

Note : You will need to copy all the MSP files except for ‘accessdesp1-en-us.msp’ and ‘wwlibcxmsp1-en-us.msp‘

4. Run each MSP file in the Update folder. You can manually do this by double-click each file, one at a time. (Or, you can create a Kaseya script, which is what we did. You use Execute Shell Command, here is an example. There will be a separate line for each of the MSP files.

msiexec /update \\FILESHARE_NAME_HERE\Office2010-365\Updates\accessdesp1-en-us.msp /qn /norestart

5. Once all the MSP’s have been run , you will need to restart your system.

6. The system will now be patched with SP1.
